Wild hogs ride again!

This last weekend saw the 3rd iteration of the Samford Hash "Wild Hogs Bike Tour", in which we took on the Moore to Esk section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail - around 100 km over two days. Let's simply quote Leave Pass's words, silently correcting some of his Alternative Facts:

"Oh what a lovely time 23 bike riders and numerous supporters had on the Moore to Esk 48km bike ride along the old railway line. The peloton came swooping into Esk at about 3.30 pm to a welcome cold beer or 2 under the rotunda and thence to the Grand Hotel for more cold libations and a good country feed and then a well earned rest only to get up the next day and do it in reverse. Only one tumble by Superhacker resulting in a wonderfully photogenic swelling of the lower back. Even the Wiggles bikies were there. Weather sooooo brilliant too and lots of shopping at the markets including throws, singing bowls and Tibetan stuff, even a farm bell!! Defo return trip in not too distant future."

There were many pictures to pick from, courtesy of multiple hashers. Here's a selection - and I'm sure there will be more in future posts:

Here's the lucky 13 riders at the start, all fresh and frisky:

Magpies and doggy bags

Miss Demeanour and Shockjock arrived this last Sunday from a training ride in preparation for next weekend's Wild Hogs bike tour.  They told a harrowing tale of being attacked by some magpies which closely resembled the velociraptors in Jurassic Park. Riders be warned: there are similar savage flying dinosaurs on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail!

Shaggy had set the walkers a pleasant flat stroll along the upper reaches of Kedron Brook - a route that allowed plenty of breath for talking along the way. The runners added a a km or two extra and a hill or two. And then 34 of us headed off once more to the Ferny Grove Bowls Club for another very tasty meal. Judging by the number of doggy bags we took away, the portions were again pretty large....

We celebrated Idle Vice's birthday in our usual quaint fashion. And Tatty gave notice of a "sort of" Baby Shower on the 10th October. For those hashers who had such a good time at her and Squelch's wedding last year, this is a "sort of" follow-up event. Look for an email about this one.

And many thanks to our hare!

A number of hashers spent the middle of last week camped by Lake Somerset, which looks pretty pretty in these shots from Redbreast and Payback. Pity about some of the objects in the foreground....

Next weekend will see the push bikers among us making our third excursion along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail - filling in the gap we have left between Esk and Moore. You'll find some memories of the first two events here and here. A number of non-bikers will be making their motorized way to Esk, joining the bikers for dinner and the night, and no doubt walking or running a segment of the trail near Esk. The stay-at-homes agreed on a pot-luck BYO meet at John Scott Park.

Next run details

Ferny Grove gourmandizing

Our trial of the "pub run" format this last Sunday was an undoubted success - so much so that those present voted to repeat the experience this coming weekend.

Jamesbondage had set the trail from the Ferny Grove railway station, where we gathered as a loose collection of 28 unrelated people (thanks to Hugandkiss for this shot):

Our hare then took the walkers on a flattish ramble around the area, in which they passed both the Tramway Museum and some amazing bicycle jumps at the Tramway Street Reserve. The runners covered some of the same ground, but added some loops into two parts of Keperra and a little bit of Ferny Hills.

Many thanks to Jamesbondage for some diligent trail marking!

Then came the real surprise of the evening - the quality and quantity of the meals at the Ferny Grove Bowls Club! What a treat! The consensus in the circle was to return next Sunday to give us a chance to explore the menu further....

Next run details

When: Sunday 20th September, 4 pm

Where: Meet at the Ferny Grove Railway Station, near the platform entrance. After the run/walk we'll proceed once more to the Ferny Grove Bowls Club. We'll be making a booking for those who have responded to emails....

"Aweary, aweary...."

Millions around the world are beginning to feel (to quote Mariana in her moated lockdown) "aweary, aweary" about Covid restrictions - and a bit peeved at those who don't follow them, and hence cause more stringent ones to be reimposed. Certainly hashing in tens is better than nothing. It's better than hashing in sixes - which is what we'd have to do if we were in the UK right now. But it will be very good to get back to where we were a month ago....

In the meantime we'll be trialing the "pub run" format this coming Sunday, making use of someone else's Covid-Safe status. Please note the details below - we'll be meeting at the Ferny Grove Railway Station and adjourning after the run/walk to the Ferny Grove Bowls Club.

Fathers' Day 2020 was a subdued affair, with the presentation of the "Tight Jocks Award" postponed, and two groups of ten meeting at Undambi and The Gap.

Walkers at The Gap met a brown tree snake on the track, but were too slow to capture an image. Here are some shots from this location:

The group that met at Undambi passed a couple of backyard observatories:

And a rather splendid treehouse under construction:

Before indulging in some adult and socially distanced play:

Hare: Jamesbondage will set the walk. The runners will add a loop or two.

9 + 10 + 4k9s

A number of hashers were away this last Sunday, which meant that we only had to form ourselves into two groups of ten or less (I have a feeling that many of us are getting sick of this - but it's probably better than getting sick of Covid-19).

The group that met at Teralba Park took themselves up and down Kedron Brook, and (slackos) failed to take any pictures of the occasion.

The group that met at the Samford soccer club enjoyed a scenic stroll along what they called the "Lakes route". Here are some shots, courtesy of Mile High:

Lax took this picture of her view for the weekend:

And Miss Demeanour spent 8 hours on Sunday completing her fundraising Bloody Long Walk. Congratulations!

Finally (once again courtesy of Mile High) here are some images of the baffling engineering structures that the runners encountered on our 16th August run. Wonder how long it will be before they get swallowed up by lantana again?
