The unhashed bits

Our hares promised us a jaunt around the unhashed bits of Upper Kedron - and they delivered! We started off from a really popular playground, then crossed the road to a school (reminded me of the old saying "You can say what you like about paedophiles, but at least they drive slowly past playgrounds and schools") and after that I have no idea where we were. There seemed to be a surprising amount of bush left among the houses...and a lot of opportunities for some fiendish checks and false trails. The on, on featured three delish courses! I'll post the recipe for the spinach soup later if I can get it off Miss Demeanour...many thanks to the hares!

We farewelled Hardcore - off to Europe to enjoy her hard-earned prize for being a top-selling travel agent. And we exclaimed at the coincidence of Hot to Trot, Slammit, Upfront, Superhacker and Hopalong all ending up in the same carriage of a Sydney-bound train this week.

There were some good jokes at the on, on. And here's another that I forgot to tell:

Bob and his mates are planning a 5-day fishing trip to Fraser Island. But the day before they are due to leave has to tell them that he can't go because his wife won't let him.

So they are really surprised when they find him at the barge the next morning, standing beside his vehicle and downing a beer.

"How did you talk your wife into letting you go, Bob?"

"I didn't have to," he says. "Last I night I was sitting in front of the TV feeling really depressed. Then my wife came up behind me, covered my eyes and said, 'Surprise!' When I peeled her hands back, she was standing there in a beautiful see-through negligee. She said, 'Carry me into the bedroom and tie me to the bed - and you can do whatever you want'...so here I am."

There'll be a Brazilian (hareless) run to start the new financial year....

Next run details
When: Sunday 3rd July, 4 pm
Where: Undambi Rotary Reserve, corner Mt O'Reilly Road and Greggs Road
Hares: M. Promptu will set the run; Potluck will cater (please bring something to share)

Eweshggr shouts!

In celebration of his birthday Eweshggr shouted the drinks this last Sunday. Now there's a precedent for other wealthy hashers to follow! And that wasn't all - those who turned up to celebrate were also treated to some classy rainforest running and walking, a choice of birthday cakes, and a top Scotch tasting...a couple of visitors had traveled all the way from New Zulund just for the free grog! Beer, pies and peas were just what was needed to build up our strength and restore out precious bodily fluids after an enjoyable series of checkbacks, false trails, memorable descents - and even more memorable climbs....Many thanks to the hares!

Eweshggr's granddaughter was asked how old he was. "Eighty eight," she replied confidently. If that's so, all I can say is that hashing keeps you young. Here are a few shots from a few years back in a long hashing career:

There were a number of jokes at the on, on - but here's one that Eweshggr forgot to tell in the circle (poor old thing - memory going - you know how it is):

An elderly Irish farmer receives a letter from the Department of Employment saying that they suspect he's not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and that an inspector is coming to interview him.

On the appointed day the inspector arrives. "Who works on this farm?" he asks, "and what do you pay them?"

"Well," says Paddy, "there's the farm hand. I pay him 240 pounds a week, and he has a free cottage. Then there's the housekeeper. She gets 190 pounds a week, plus free board and lodging. There's also the half-wit. He works 16 hour days, does 90% of the work, earns about 25 pounds a week along with a bottle of whiskey, and as a special treat occasionally gets to sleep with my wife."

"That's disgraceful," says the inspector. "I need to interview the half-wit."

"You're talking to him now," says Paddy.

Next run details

The groves of academe

once more echoed to cries of "On, on!" this weekend at another brainy UQ meet. A multitude of checks provided many opportunities for the rigorous testing of hypotheses - through research which sometimes led up blind alleys but which always challenged our initial assumptions - as we explored the nether regions of the campus. Penetrating some of these secret recesses proved an interesting and exhilarating exercise (as the b. said to the a.)

Latecomers and shortcutters Jamesbondage and Redbreast caught up with the runners after the bold crossing of the Great Court and the visit to the Lakes. From here the route took us via the Green Bridge to Dutton Park. The runners' trail featured a loop along the Brisbane Corso - past what were (before the floods) some of the most expensive houses in town. Finally 20 runners and walkers converged for a cheerful on, on at the Tennis Centre. The ice wasn't really necessary to cool the drinks.

Thanks to Superhacker and Hopalong for another stimulating excursion!

Next Sunday we'll be testing another theory - that Mt Nebo is warmer in winter than the Samford Valley. Is it really so - or is it just the Shggrs' red-hot passion for one another that makes them think it? Bring your thermometers to check it out....

Next run details
When: Sunday 19th June, 4 pm
Where: The Shggrs' loveshack, Mt Nebo

Champion camp chow

We've had some top meals on our weekends away, but Saturday night's effort at Jimna ranked right up there. A total of seven camp ovens - plus a couple of monster saucepans - were called into service to produce a succulent meal of roast beef, roast lamb, roast pork, roast spuds, roast pumpkin, beans, broccoli, sprouts and gravy (we won't mention the carrots....) And all this was preceded by Cobb oven scones with jam and cream, pate, cheeses and exploding chestnuts - and followed up by rice pudding and lemon cream trifle and chocolates. Everything was of course washed down with sundry spiritous liquors - taken strictly for medicinal purposes, to keep out the cold.

We did a bit of walking too...

Nipliquor took his crutches out for their final run before his cast comes off on Tbursday:

And Shockjock gave Miss Demeanour a suck of his nipple:

The tranquil campsite:

And the serious business of dinner preparation:

...which was watched closely by some of the locals:

As we know, people are not wearing enough hats:

So we tried to do our bit for hat-wearing through the Hat Competition:

And here's part of the circle around the camp fire:

All in all - a great weekend. Thanks to everyone for their company and their contributions!

Next Sunday we're calling on all queens to join us for a birthday do....

Next run details
When: Sunday 12th June (Queen's Birthday run)
Where: University of Queensland CityCat Terminal - corner Blair Drive and Sir William Macgregor Drive, St Lucia.
Hares: Superhacker and Hopalong

Still going strong...

Samford Hash gained a septuagenarian member last weekend when the hashing horde gathered to celebrate Charcoal's birthday. He was one of the first members of Samford Hash when it was founded in 1991. It's still going strong...and so is he! Congratulations!

Here's a shot of the group that gathered under the grape vines after a typical Charcoal jaunt around Clear Mountain (thanks to Topless for the photography):

As a veteran member Charcoal has always been a tower of strength to the Hash, and some members have grown used to leaning on him for support:

Two old friends (and relatives, of course) - Possum and Charcoal:

The Hares provided a great meal, followed by The Cake:

...which was rapidly demolished:

And then the party really started to get going...

Thanks to the hares - and we wish Charcoal many, many more Samford Hash runs!

This weekend many of us will be freezing our tootsies, our proboscises and various other bits of anatomy up in the Jimna State Forest. Word is that we'll be the only group in the campground - surprise, surprise! I'm sure however that some of the temperance beverages we'll be taking along will help to warm our cockles. Any stayathomes who are feeling lost and lonely on Sunday afternoon are invited to gather at John Scott Park for an M. Promptu outing followed by a visit to the pub.

Next run details
When: Sunday 5th June - when we get up...(could be a heavy night)
Where: from Peach Trees campsite, Jimna State Forest
Hares: Jamesbondage and Redbreast (if they're capable)

For stayathomes - an impromptu village meet at 4 pm
