"Oh we do love to be beside

the seaside...." - and we were not the only ones this Sunday to enjoy a perfect day in Redcliffe.

We began with an impromptu rendering of the song (which the neighbours must have enjoyed.) Then during the run briefing a couple of naughty boys were disciplined by being hugged by the hare (the neighbours must have enjoyed this too - I'm sure the naughty boys did.) I think we did just as well as Basil Rathbone:

Topless once again led us along the shore and through the inland, including many tricky navigational surprises along the way. Once back home, she treated us to a three-course feast (including Dutch honey cake) and some German plum liqueur! Yum - and vielen dank!

Talk of food reminds me: here (by popular request) is a recipe for the dish that Bigtop served up the week before...

Chicken & Coriander Chilaquile

Ingredients:
10 Flour tortillas cut into strips
Meat from a cooked chicken cut into bite size pieces
400ml jar Salsa medium hot
400ml chicken stock
3 toms finely chopped
1 capsicum finely chopped
1/4 cup coriander finely chopped
2 tsp garlic
1 tsp ground cumin
3 cups grated cheese

Place tortilla strips on baking tray & bake for 30 mins @ 180 deg.
Combine salsa, stock, coriander, capsicum, toms, cumin & cheese, mix well.
In a large wide casserole dish put half the chicken, spoon over 1/3 of salsa mix.
Layer with 1/2 of tortilla strips. repeat with chicken, 1/3 salsa mix & the other 1/2 of tortilla strips.
Finish with remaining salsa & sprinkle the top with cheese.
Bake 30 mins @ 180 deg.

The sky had been micturating

over Samford for most of the day, but fortunately it held off over Hawthorne and Bulimba for Sunday's run/walk.

Our hares provided a scenic route along the river and through some new developments, and topped it off with a stunning view of the city as sunset fell. We were safe on Hardcore's deck by the time the rain followed the sunset's example.

For the third time in the last few weeks, our trail crossed that of another hash...with luck the rain will clean the streets of old chalk marks...we tend to get confused easily enough anyway!

And one of the great things about having 3 hares is that you can end up with 3 meals. Here are a couple of the chefs providing the finishing touches:

This area was another one of Shockjock's old stamping grounds. His father owned a commercial laundry beside the river at the time of the great Brisbane floods, and he pointed out where he had paddled round the premises in a big laundry tub....

Judging beer at the Samford Show has obviously given him a taste for being critical, and he found plenty to be critical about in various electrical installations throughout the suburb. Even Hardcore's back deck gave him something to get excited about:

On next week's run we'll be showing off our taut and tanned torsos at the seaside. Topless will be setting the run from Margate...and here is an artist's impression of some typical Samford hashers:

And looking well ahead...we have a few special events coming up. Charcoal and Strine are planning an Oktoberfest run for September (when else?), and our usual Halloween event will follow in October. February will see Samford Hash turning 21 (wow!), and preparations have already begun for this major festivity.

"Believe me, my young friend,

there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half as much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."

Sinbad and Junky persuaded at least a couple of hashers of the truth of what the Water Rat* had to say as we enjoyed the wonderful views and the very comfortable facilities at the LSWA clubhouse - it appears there will be some new applications for club membership coming from the members of Samford Hash!

We have now seen Lake Samsonvale both in drought and brimming, and have previously walked and run on both the Forgan Cove/Bullocky's Rest end and the Gold's Scrub end. But our hares this Sunday introduced us to an entirely new and very scenic section of the foreshore. A taxing logistical exercise had the runners start from the water and the walkers (and cyclists) from the Winn Road gate, but it worked out well. The sumptuous nosh included some triffic apple crumble - well done, hares! It's not easy catering for 32 hungry hashers....

Prosit!

A cheerful gemeinschaft of us gathered last Tuesday at the German Club for a winter bierfest and pig-out (thanks to Topless for the photography):

We tried hard, but could only sample a fraction of the beers on offer:
Photobucket

Poor old Payback did eventually get his meal:

Although by then the rest of us has finished:

Sunday's run featured a perambulation around Upper Kedron, which was instantly recognisable from Leave Pass's map. This is an accurate representation of what he produced to show off his cartographic skills:

It was lucky that he did. Another Hash had apparently been running in the same area, and their arrows were a bit confusing....

One couple celebrated a 36th wedding anniversary at the on, on:

The cake: a Jackson Pollock, or had someone been sick?

And another young hasher was awarded a down, down for arriving at the Hash with a missing tooth:

Thanks to Leave Pass for an enjoyable run/walk and a ribfilling meal....

Strychnine trail?

Charcoal had used a lot of flour in laying a crystal clear trail through the woods. We were also impressed by his stylish chalk arrows on the suburban bits:

But one local confronted the runners, demanding to know if the "white stuff" was poison. His dog had been "foaming at the mouth" after trying some. We assured him that Darcy ate it all the time with no ill effects...and that he is meant to look as he does.

Great weather for running/walking, a scenic well-marked route, some tasty soup, pasta and salad - well done, hares! The blazing braziers were very welcome as well - although Vegemite recently found an old (hashing) method for keeping warm all winter with just one piece of firewood:
Recipe to keep a person warm the whole winter with a single Billet of Wood. — Take a billet of wood the ordinary size, run up into the garret with it as quick as you can, throw it out of the garret window; run down after it (not out of the garret window mind) as fast as possible; repeat this till you are warm, and as often as occasion may require. It will never fail to have the desired effect whilst you are able to use it. — Probatum est*.

Leave Pass has just returned from the UK with stories of having upstaged Martin Clunes in the filning of the latest series of Doc Martin. Is he the real father of Miss Glasson's baby? We look forward to checking it out when the episode is shown here....

There will be no mid-week run this week, as about 26 of us are booked in this Tuesday for a great Samford Hash bierfest and food fight at the German Club. Tasting notes and pics will follow next week - assuming that we can remember anything of the evening.
