Another stunning sunset

Multiple phone cameras were pulled out to capture the view as the sun sank over Lake Samsonvale this last Sunday. It was indeed a beaut afternoon for a stroll or jog along the shore, followed by a little socialising.... Here are some of the shots that various hashers took - each of them (we think) worthy of being included in a calendar:

The walkers added a bit of rock climbing to their route, and the runners added a loop through the neighbouring suburb. Lax and Prattle arrived with someone who looked vaguely familiar and who spoke Kiwi. It was good to see all of them again. And we were also pleased to catch up with Gunther! He was out for the half-hour constitutional he's now permitted after his second opera$$$$tion.

Here are a few pics of some walkers en route, and a few of the group back at Forgan Park. Thanks to multiple camera-people!

And as always, we're incredibly grateful to our dedicated beermeisters and winos - many thanks, guys!

Virgin hares and a figure eight

The name "Keperra" derives from the initiation ceremonies that used to take place at the bora ring now buried beneath the Keperra Golf Course and some adjacent houses. Samford Road at Keperra roughly follows an ancient route that led on to the Samford bora ring in Wights Mountain. So in walking the streets of this suburb one is traversing some very old trails that led along Kedron Brook and its tributaries - even though some of these little creeks have now been turned into drains....

This week's walking trail took the form of a figure eight around one of these tributaries, and took in some of the older and newer architecture of the area as well. The runners added a loop that ventured into the Keperra Bushland reserve, but they didn't attempt the climb to the summit they've done in the past...they're not getting old, are they?

Here are a few shots from the walk, courtesy of Snappy:

And here are some runners, looking surprisingly fresh on their return:

Our virgin hares were Kermit and her sister Lil, who produced the most magnificent Chinese-themed banquet. It was high time for the latter to receive a Hash name, since despite her years of hashing in Hong Kong she had never been awarded one (...or could it be that she has never been awarded one that she would admit to?). The choice was obvious, and we were very pleased to bestow on her the moniker "Sweet and sour"! Here she is, taking part in the traditional naming ceremony - congratulations and thanks!

Some views of the group, re-hydrating prior to stuffing their faces:

Our hares had recruited some help in the kitchen from their house guests and from their mum, who produced some triffic apple crumble! Here are some of the catering crew with our hares - many thanks for all your efforts! What a high standard of fare they set! (We'll be back to earth next week, I suspect....)

Finally, we now have another septuagenarian in our midst - and here is Budgie with a conflagration topping his birthday cake. Welcome to your new decade, sir!

The road to Samford Pier (and a recipe)

"- Tell me now, Stephen said, poking the boy's shoulder with the book, what is a pier.

- A pier, sir, Armstrong said. A thing out in the waves. A kind of bridge. Kingstown pier, sir....

- Kingstown pier, Stephen said. Yes, a disappointed bridge."

[James Joyce, Ulysses]

And if a pier is a disappointed bridge, a bridge to nowhere, then Samford has a very substantial and handsome pier. Here are some walkers captured in the act of summiting the structure:

And here they are on the other side, i.e. (obviously) Nowhere:

It was a lovely Spring afternoon for a leisurely stroll around the Samford circuit, and the walkers completed it after returning over the bridge to Somewhere. The runners added a loop along Gibbons Road and a section of the South Pine, unintentionally startling a poor female Sunday stroller who hadn't heard their panting and thudding approach.

Potluck, as usual, provided an amazingly tasty and substantial feast, and we did full justice to it. Thanks to all for their contributions!

It was Cash Converta's birthday, and Redbreast had provided a delicious and very pretty cake for the occasion.

Of course a birthday down, down was in order as well:

Now, for those who may have missed it, here's a historic shot of a young Mile High opening a door. It gives real meaning to the term "Queen's Scout" - and doesn't he look smart?

Finally - here is Lil's recipe for her easy peanut cookies:

2 cups crunchy peanut butter

1 1/2 cups brown sugar

2 eggs

chocolate chips or pieces to taste

Mix all ingredients. Allow to stand (or refrigerate for 10 mins) until mixture stiffens enough to handle. Form into balls (approx. 1 Tsp) and place in tray on baking paper. Bake (180 degrees) until done (approx. 10 mins). WARNING: May contain traces of nuts....

Next run/walk details

When: Sunday 18th September, 4 pm

Where: Kermit and Lil's Keperra kip

Hares: Kermit and Lil. Expect some delicious Chinese chow!

Please bring a chair. And please park on the road outside of their rather confined Close....

Dad's Day 2022

We've always said that you don't have to be a biological father to exhibit fatherly behaviour (and in fact Roman Catholic "fathers" are not meant to have biological children at all....) One of B&W's fur-babies suffered an injured toe during this Sunday's run, and nothing could have been more father-like than the way in which he cleaned up the blood and wrapped up the wound. This tender caring confirmed that B&W was indeed a worthy recipient of this year's Father of the Year Award. Last year's recipient (Upstanding) accordingly handed over the Tight Jocks trophy with all due ceremonial, and the winner proudly donned the prestigious garment:

According to tradition, each recipient is charged with enhancing the decorations, and last year's winner had enlisted a Prep class to help. So this is the first time the Jocks have featured these stylish budgies!

B&W has pledged to look after the Tight Jocks, make sure they never see the inside of a washing machine, enhance their appearance, and pass them over to our 2023 winner....Congratulations!

Our hares, Upstanding and Idle Vice, had been too worried about the possibility of rain to set a trail (oh, yes!) but, as live hares, led the walkers on an enjoyable circuit of the Upper Kedron region. The runners completed a wider circuit, using a smart watch to locate and follow a series of twittens (look it up) that join up many cul de sacs in the area. Here are some hashers at the start (what is the time?):

and here are some of Snappy's pictures from the walk:

 Where are we??

Back at the Ferny Grove Sports Club, we tucked in to some scrumptious Malaysian cuisine - and, awed somewhat by our civilised surroundings, kept the noise levels down a bit. Down, downs will have to wait till next week....

Elsewhere in the world, Leave Pass has been taking on some of the local wildlife in Canada, while Hopalong took on some of the local architecture in Italy:

(A moose in Canada is rather larger than a moose in Scotland - Dad joke....)
