Live Hares and twin Belles

Once again this last Sunday rain washed away the trail markings...and then on Monday a late shower did the same for the trail that Tinkerbell had set for the Red Dress run. So live hares were needed on both occasions - that's three in a row now!

Here (verbatim) is Payback's run report for Sunday:

"* The afternoon rain cleared all signs of the trail, so Le Wank became a live hare. Rather than use flour, he raided the pantry and used dessicated coconut instead. Let's hope Lax doesn't need it in her next cooking endeavour.

* Luckily, the rain held off and we had a pleasant run/walk along the creek up to the Arana Leagues Club and across Dawson Parade. We then went through suburbia and down trendy Blackwood Road.

* The runners stopped off at St Matthews church to view the hilltop grave stones. What a view the dead have.

* We all expected sausages, but we were surprised with some rather tasty lasagna. Even more surprising was that Le Wank prepared the meal all by himself, as Lax and Prattle were swanning around Sydney. Afterwards we were rewarded with a variety of ice creams on a stick. Gaytimes were one of the most popular and they went quickly.

* It was a great afternoon and everyone had a gay time."

Many thanks to Snappy for the following shots!

Le W*nk gave a geography lesson: "Top Rugby-Playing Nations":

The Samford contingent for the Red Dress Run this year numbered seven, after Le W*nk, Lax and Payback were late scratchings. The excuse for the first two was overwork. The latter pulled out because of, well, diarrhoea. Was this a result of Le W*nk's cooking? We'll never know....

The Bell sisters, Tinkerbell and Dumbbell, sported identical hairstyles, at least on their heads. (No-one wanted to check the rest of their anatomies.)

Once more WE judged Hugandkiss and Mile High as the best dressed there. Unfortunately Mile High can't have bribed the bar staff enough, so that for once he didn't win the best-dressed award. Boys don't cry, but girls may:

The Red Dress route this year took us through some very swish bits of Fortitude Valley, with the runners' and walkers' trails coinciding at the Valley Mall for icy-poles and then again for a walk through the quite crowded Howard Smith Wharves area. Then it was up the stairs (what? did some people take the lift? Surely not!) to the top of the cliffs for cake, port and lemon - and a down, down or two - before a return to the Brunswick Hotel.

As usual for the Red Dress Run, there are a plethora of pictures to choose from, and here are a few from multiple cameras:

Remember our participation in the 2022 Dayboro Beer Mile back on Australia Day?

Banger now reports that Samford Hash runners taking part in the event feature on the front page of the 2023 Dayboro Calendar! We'll be back!

Finally, elsewhere in the world...the news from our Cambridge chapter is that Malpractice channeled Stanley Holloway at a local Christmas concert, reciting "The 'ole in the ark" by Marriott Edgar. He used Ted as a prop for the part where the dog inserted his nose as a bung.

Thrifty neighbours

Rain delayed our start this last Sunday, because it really was belting down at 5 o'clock. Here's the view from Snappy's car when she arrived:

All the hares' painstaking work in marking the trail had been washed away, so we set out with a live guide to tour the thrifty neighbourhood, passing no less than four houses whose owners had clearly taken to heart all the proverbs we learnt as children - "a penny saved is a penny earned; waste not, want not; always keep something for a rainy day; a fool and his money are soon parted" etc., etc. These are people who have never thrown anything away....

Other points of interest along the way were the site where a notorious murder took place in 1952, and this spectacularly seasonally adorned house:

The route proved too difficult for the hare to explain to the rather navigationally challenged runners' group, so they elected in the end to join the walkers along the rain-washed trail. Here are a few of Snappy's shots from the walk:

Culture noted the twig markers for those who use the stairs for training...unfortunately we had time for only one lap.

We gathered back in the hares' very tidy back yard, where we were able to form an almost perfect circle. Vege lasagna, snags and salad were followed by ice-cream! The self-elected royals surveyed the scene from the balcony...and attempted to baptise those below....Many, many thanks to Upstanding and Idle Vice!
