Terra incognita

Our hares this Sunday led us once more into some terra incognita. It's amazing, really, how much unexplored territory there is within a reasonable radius of Samford Central...and it's always interesting to go somewhere new. It's true that here and there we did touch on the odd spot that looked familiar - but for most of the time most of us had no idea where we were. Some very tasty chili with appropriate accompaniments followed. Thanks to our hares - and our best wishes to Shockjock as he adopts his new regime of treatment for (WARNING: swearword to follow) plantar fasciitis.

Some of us had been to the Robotronica exhibition at QUT earlier in the day. The 3-D goggles with their panorama of a fantasy Brisbane were a real hit. (You can get your own copy of the app here.)

Haughty celebrated a birthday with a cake that welcomed him into the Age of Dinosaurs:

And Hopalong could never get lost in the dark with these fluoro nails:

Here, courtesy of Payback, are some shots from last week's trip up (and down - oh, and then up) Mt. Coot-tha. The camera doesn't do justice to the slope (or the calf pain):

Crampons, carabiners and pitons, anyone?

Crampons, carabiners and pitons would all have been useful this last Sunday at Mt. Coot-tha. This had to be one of our steepest excursions ever - particularly the route the runners took down towards Chapel Hill...and then back up again to the summit. Many thanks to Le W*nk for introducing us to some virgin territory for Samford Hash - and we really might bring some ropes next time.

Our hare laid on some gourmet sarnies to follow - salmon, tuna, avocado and what-not - and we then queued for some gourmet ice-cream cones. Just the thing for a really cool, even cold, evening on the summit! Well done, George - oh, and Le W*nk too.

We welcomed Gastrick back from the UK and France. He claimed that he'd not run much while he was away. It didn't look like it, though, as he led the pack up the mountain!

Finally, Escargot is raising money for the Smith Family as she runs the Bridge to Brisbane in a couple of weeks. Do you recognise the source of the photo on her fundraising page? Give up? Here it is!

"Show us the money!"

A group of about 40 hashers and hangers-on gathered at Culture and Haughty's on Saturday evening to help them celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. It was a great night! Thanks to all who contributed to a feast of fantastic eatables and drinkables...and a special mention for Shockjock, who provided 2 kegs of outstanding homebrew!

There were a number of cameras in use, but Charcoal was first off the mark with his images (he contributed a video too, which may well make it into a future post.)

The crowd begins to gather,,,

including a Harley rider and his moll:

The bride of 40 years back starred in the kitchen:

Everyone was eager to see how Le W*nk would wriggle out of his rash wager that she would not be able to fit into the dress she got married in. He wrote and starred in a 3 act drama in an attempt to delay the inevitable...

The stern bank manager eventually authorized the loan...

and, at last, the debt was paid:

Miss Demeanour presented the Ruby Wedding couple with a chance to suffer heart attacks at Dreamworld:

The firepit provided warmth, but it's lucky we all love wood-smoke so much:

The following day, the very suave and well-turned out Jamesbondage and Redbreast laid on a classy run/walk around the Bunya back blocks and followed this up with some equally classy pasta. All in all, a really enjoyable weekend - and thanks to our hares!

Floater is competing at the Sunshine Coast marathon and running festival at the end of the month - and raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation as she does so. You're invited to support her here.

Le W*nk set a run/walk just a couple of weeks ago. But he's a glutton for punishment and we're happy to punish him...so he's doing it again this coming Sunday. Since it's a Mt Coot-tha meet you can expect a very flat run/walk, but bring your walking poles, torches, ropes, carabiners, crampons etc. just in case. Please bring a chair if you are the sort of wuss who wants to sit down.

When: Sunday 16th August, 4 pm

Gone with the wind

Ubi sunt? Where is the old homestead now? We spent a bit of time at the site of Le W*nk's former mansion - all gone with the wind. Where were the palatial bedrooms? The sauna and jacuzzi? The Gold Class theatre room? The present-wrapping room? The 5-star chicken accommodation? All gone...and in a few years when the newly-planted trees grow up, no-one will realise that there was a house there at all. Makes you think, eh?

Congratulations to Redbreast, who completed her first full walk after her reconstruction. And congratulations to Shockjock too, on his first post-injury half-run for quite a while.

Despite what Le W*nk said at the start, there was plenty of flour. And, as usual, Payback provided plenty of tasty nosh to follow. Thanks to all.

It was good that Groundsheet and Little Squirt were able to join us again. This is getting to be a bit of a habit, guys - well done!

Next run details
When: Sunday 9th August, 4 pm
Where: Dugandan Road, Bunya - where the houses start (about 1.7 km from the turnoff, I think.) A map!
