Wet and dry

Once again, Payback is the wordsmith responsible for this week's run report - thanks to him! Here is what he had to say:

"It was a drizzly afternoon and not many hashers were expected to turn up. However, surprisingly, 30 hardy souls decided to make an appearance. It goes to show that nothing stops a Samford Hasher when fine food is on the menu. And again, it was fine food – thanks, everyone!

There was a plethora of umbrellas as the walkers set off on the usual trail. The runners didn’t need such protection as they didn’t care if the got their hair/scalps wet. Perhaps they were preparing themselves for the Queenstown weather. Despite the outlook, it ended up a clear and sunny afternoon.

After the meal we had a round of jokes. Some were good and some, like Shock Jock’s dad jokes, were marginal. This area needs improvement!"

And here is a selection of Snappy's shots from the event:

Wise words from a wise man (sorry, person)

This week's post was once again penned by the eloquent Payback:

"Civilisation has caught with the Parksedge Street area, what with a new shopping centre, more housing, new roundabouts and even a two lane bridge across Cedar Creek.

We did the usual trail towards the Bellbird Grove carpark. It was a bit muddy in places, which will result in lots of shoe cleaning in the next few days. Dumbbell decided to do some mud wrestling – not sure if this was part of his exercise regime.

The runners headed toward the old gold mines and as usual were amazed by the amount of work the miners had accomplished with little reward.  As Mahatma Gandhi once said “Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment; full effort is full victory.”

Back at the on, on we were expecting Leave Pass’s famous pizza or Mr Woolworth's lasagne, but he surprised us with some tasty alternatives.

A big welcome to Spanish hasher – Streaky."

Food, glorious food

Our potluck food session on Sunday proved a great success. There was food for every taste and a bit of nostalgia with the bread and butter pudding.
We did the usual circuit trail past the bowls club, under the road and up toward the soccer club. However, there was a large contingent of short cutters who were blatant in their audacity. Down downs were out of the question, as that would have left the eskies completely empty.
Shock Jock and Payback decided to follow the trail behind the tennis courts. They wanted to see devastation caused by the flood and to check out the grove of trees Shock Jock and family had helped to plant years ago. The trees were found robust and healthy, but not so a recently planted grove.

Stroll around the debris

Last Monday night Samford made the news for copping over 300 mm of rain in just a few hours - and the evidence of it was everywhere to be seen during a steamy toddle through the village. The level at which Samford Creek had peaked was quite impressive, and we passed at least one house that had been flooded.

Our original hares, B&W and Trudi Fruti, had had to pull out of hosting us at Jolly's Lookout because they were busy dealing with a landslip; another couple of hashers had had part of their ceiling collapse; and another couple had spent the week dealing with a fallen tree that required a 360-tonne crane to clean up. It was quite a weather-filled week....

Despite the persistent heat and humidity, some 29 or 30 or us turned up at the Farmers' Hall. Walkers had the choice of a medium or short option - and guess which the majority chose! Meanwhile those who completed the 8 km run came home completely drenched. Shockjock was so dehydrated that he was even spotted with a XXXX in hand as he replenished his precious bodily fluids - piling one insult to his body on top of another!

Thai curry and pizza made for an interesting international gastronomic experience.

Another significant event this week was the release of the Queenstown run list, with its coded "Lord of the Rings" run descriptions. A sheet was circulated which gave those of us going to NZ an opportunity to share our preferences. The application form comes out on Wednesday, and those who're planning on doing the Ballbreaker will have to be quick - there are only 100 spaces.

Here are some shots from this Sunday, courtesy of  Snappy - thanks again to her!
