Last of the winter runs 2023

The temperatures have been telling us that winter ended a good while ago - but in our traditional designation of the seasons our next meet will be the first of the summer ones, marked by a 5 pm (1700 h, as Upstanding put it) start time.

Our hares had picked an idyllic setting beside the lakes at Warner this last Sunday, and took us on a route that explored some areas of the suburb that we haven't visited before. Here are a couple of Cash Converta's views of the walk:

There was plenty to look at along the way. Some people noted the number of businesses being operated from home, while others remarked on the smallness of the arrows marking the trail...but there was no excuse for those who missed the turn in through the koala fence and were consequently awarded a down, down:

It was good to see Gillian again on one of her flying visits from California, and to sing "Happy birthday" to Hugandkiss. Our hares laid on a magnificent burger feast, with lashings of trimmings, sauces and options. Here they are, hard at work - many thanks to them for the trail and the meal!

And here are some more of Cash Converta's shots of hashers enjoying the burgers, the company, and the late afternoon breeze. Can anyone recall if the conversation occasionally turned to rugby and the World Cup at all?

Next week will be our Halloween Run, so once again you are invited to leave off your usual make-up and masks, and come as your real scary self! You'll find some examples in the blog archives of  what Samford hashers really look like beneath the surface....

Finally, the Brisbane Red Dress Run is coming up on Monday December 4th. We usually have a great turnout from Samford for this charity event, so mark the date in your diaries and check your little red number - does your bum look big in it, and do you need to head to an Op Shop to replace it?

Tour de detours

Houses in Upper Kedron continue to multiply exponentially, like bacteria on a nutrient-rich agar plate. And the infrastructure-builders have to respond. Does this explain why the walk on Sunday included what Budgie describes as an "interesting" route through "many detours around road construction...."? Some hashers were once again tied up with SPADEwerx activities, others were away, and one couple had to deal with a livestock emergency. Hence numbers were once more limited to "a small but hardy group" of about twelve, and quality, not quantity, was the order of the day.

Here are a few shots from the walk:

The onon was held at the new Upper Kedron Cafe 63 where, again according to Budgie, there was "plenty of light from the setting sun and noise from infernal machines". The latter sounded interesting - were they perhaps the "machines of Satan" that Milton describes in Book 6 of Paradise Lost? But apparently what Budgie meant were "grinders and juicers". I suppose Satan might have a use for these as well. Thanks to our hare, Leave Pass!

Talking of matters Satanic, our Halloween run is coming up on October 29th. As is our tradition, this will be the occasion on which we move to a 5 pm start time, so please note this in your diaries. Here's a video reminder as well:

Uncooth mount Mount Coot-tha - 2023

[If you have a good title, then re-use it....Yet again we are grateful to Lax for the words in this week's post! Thank you!]

Numbers were down on Sunday due to involvement of many members in Spadewerx activities. "Calendar Girls" has had rave reviews and a very good time was had by all at the Gala!

At the chalk talk Shockjock explained that our run around JC Slaughter Falls was to be an adventure starting with a BBC map and a complete lack of marking!

The runners embraced the adventure including apologising to two mature walkers. Apparently running past them three times could be counted as a coincidence but doing it four times is stalking! No walkers were harmed or lost for too long!

Well done to Miss Demeanor and Shockjock for the chicken drumsticks and sumptuous extras at the onon.

Over Hill, Over Dale !!

[This week's post has once again been brilliantly penned by Lax. Many thanks and congrats to her!]

We had a challenging wander through the “hills” of Ascot this week.    Our hare Le W*nk showed us some of the views he enjoys whilst working on some of the local sad and unloved houses in downtown Ascot.  While enjoying the views of the Brisbane river and surrounding hills, notes were taken to NEVER book a function on the Island party boat.  The music was so loud 4 kms away !

The views were breathtaking and the houses were perched precariously on the side of the “hills” that were supposed to be avoided this run  (LOL !) We wandered past the Ascot State School and have had early feedback this week that the chalk markings, smiley faces and arrows were frowned upon by certain locals thinking they were directions to the local drug dens!!

The wildlife included lama/alpaca on the estate on Eldernell Terrace which was the home of the Archbishops of the Anglican Church until its sale in 2007 for $11.2 million.

Our start and finish was at the Ascot water tower lookout where we enjoyed Ascot fare comprising an amazing grazing table and our usual liquid refreshments.

[Here are some of Saucy Sous' and Snappy's pics of the occasion]:
