Gallivanting through The Gap

Hopalong and Nipliquor celebrated their birthdays at this Sunday's meet and we sang Happy Birthday in both English and German (thanks to Topless for the words - viel Gluck!) We're all getting more ancient....

Bush and burbs and a creek crossing featured on the outing. Darcy was the only one who fell in - but that was probably deliberate. The runners, having negotiated Superhacker's cunning trail pretty well, decided to add a loop for fun - and ended up lost and benighted in the wilds behind the Ashgrove Golf Club. Things can go very wrong when we try to think for ourselves!

The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is upon us...and the time has come once more for us to move to a 4 pm start. This will be for Leave Pass's run on April 10th - in a fortnight's time. Make a note of it....

And here's a little birthday story:

A man asks his wife, "What would you like most of all for your birthday?"

She says, "I'd love to be ten again."

So on the morning of her birthday, he gets her up bright and early and takes her to a theme park. He insists that she goes on every ride - the Death Slide, The Screaming Loop, the Wall of Fear, and more.

She staggers out of the park five hours later and he then takes her off to the movies. They watch a cartoon, and have popcorn, soft drinks and sweets. At last he drives her home and she collapses into bed.

Her husband leans over and asks tenderly, "Well, dear, what was it like being ten again?"

She groans, "Actually, I meant dress size!"

A great day for the Irish

Our hares had laid a shamrock trail to celebrate St Paddy - 3 loops for the walkers, and a 4th lucky one for the runners. They followed it up with that well-known Irish dish, lasagna, served during a memorable on, on beneath the pitch-dark trees.

Ireland is well known as a land of bogs, so the setting was pretty authentic as well. Bunya Riverside was recently under the river, and it showed....Some of the flour had also been obliterated by some Irish sunshine earlier in the day. No rain during the walk/run, though, which made for a nice change. Thanks to the hares!

We shared a number of Irish jokes...and here's one more for the kiddies:

Father Murphy is giving Sister Marie a lift back to her convent in country Ireland. It's a bitterly cold winter night, and it's snowing. As they enter a village the car gets stuck in a huge snowdrift. There's no point in trying to go on - the roads beyond are impassable.

They struggle to the village inn, to find there's only one room available....

"Well, Sister," says Father Murphy, "we have no alternative but to share a room. I will sleep on the sofa, and I won't undress."

So Sister Marie gets into bed and he lies down on the sofa. Ten minutes later she says, "Father, are you awake?"

"Yes, Sister."

"I'm terribly cold."

He gets up and fetches her a blanket from the top of the wardrobe.

"I'm still cold, Father," she says a little later - and he gets her another blanket.

Ten minutes go by....

"Father, I'm still very cold."

"All right. I'll get you another blanket," he says.

"But I'm really cold....Father, I'm wondering...would it be very sinful if just for tonight we behaved like man and wife?"

"Yes, you're right," he says. "Get your own blanket!"

Drowned rats

Samford Hash runs and walks come rain or shine. Not much shine this Sunday, though...it bucketed down as soon as we set off, and we came back like drowned rats - or like contestants in a wet teeshirt competition. (Payback was probably the winner of that one.)

Was Hardcore brave or stupid? She ran the whole trail completely blind behind rain-splattered glasses....

It was good to welcome back Topless from Germany and Bigtop from New Zulund.

Here's a little story for the elder gents among us...

An old fellow comes into the confessional and says:

"Father, I am 85 years old and I have had an incredible day. This morning I went to have coffee at the local coffee shop. There was a beautiful 19 year old waitress there, and we got talking. One thing led to another, and we ended up having sex round the back of the shop.

Then I went to the local library to change my books. There was a beautiful young librarian there and we got talking. One thing led to another, and we ended up having sex between the shelves of books.

I was feeling a bit tired after this, so I took a taxi home. The taxi driver was a beautiful 20 year old woman, and we got talking. One thing led to another, and we ended up having sex in the back of the taxi."

The priest tries not to seem shocked. "Adultery is a grievous sin, my son," he says. "You are to say 50 rosaries and 100 Hail Marys."

"I don't know how to do that," says the old man. "I'm not Catholic - I'm Jewish."

"Well," says the priest,"why did you come in here and tell me your sins?"

"Father," says the old man patiently, "I'm 85 years old and I have had an incredible day. I'm telling everybody I can!"

A load of rubbish...

(as usual). This Sunday was Clean Up Australia Day - and Samford Hash did its bit, picking up quite a few bagfulls on the walk and run. Our hares had set a challenging but really scenic trail that took us to the top of Camp Mountain and to sundry places thereabouts. They'd promised to organise some cooler weather this week and kept their promise - thanks for that!

At the on, on back at the hares' place one young gentleman baptised his new shoes in traditional fashion. We also held a naming ceremony for a new member - Junky. She's an avid collector, we hear (as well as an adrenaline fiend), so Clean Up Australia Day was very appropriate for her welcome into the Samford Hash family.

Friday evening saw many of us joining the beautiful and brilliant people who hang out at the Brisbane Powerhouse. We kept our heads down and I don't think we stuck out too much. We were there to enjoy Mel Buttle's gig...and to celebrate our own Buttle who provided so much of her material (hope he's on commission.) It was a great night.

A village run next week, with catering by Potluck (please bring something to share.)

D-Day at D-Bay

Seventeen of us gathered for lunch and jazz at the Mermaid Cafe on the Deception Bay waterfront. Shockjock wore his Dress Thongs in honour of the occasion, and Secret Agent Culture took some shots with a camera cunningly disguised as a phone. As a camera, it made a good phone:

We had a lazy hour or so after this beside the water while waiting for the rest of the crew to join us. Haughty once more failed to get it up (his kite, that is) and Urass made himself useful by wagging his tail and retrieving the frisbee that kept going in the water - when it wasn't hitting passers-by on the head

The run/walk took us along the track towards Scarborough. It was a pleasant seaside stroll and the breeze was very welcome...as was the beer at the on, on! Our hares for next Sunday have promised that the weather will be cooler.

Friday evening will see many of us heading to the Brisbane Powerhouse for a show all about one of our own! We're hoping to learn a lot more about our Buttle from his daughter - and perhaps we can tell her a thing or two as well....
