Esplanade promenade

Brighton, Queensland is very similar to its namesake in Sussex - if you ignore the absence of:
- waves crashing into a pebbled beach;
- the Prince Regent's Pavillion;
- Georgian houses along the front;
- the Grand Hotel;
- the Palace Pier (and its Amusements);
- whelk and jellied eel stalls;
- sticks of peppermint rock;
- chalk cliffs; and so on....
If you ignore these things, then you could be in either place as you stride out in a stiffish breeze along the esplanade - and it's a very pleasant experience on a sunny Sunday afternoon. For once, the headwind we encountered travelling south did not swing round to become a headwind as we travelled north.

We returned to Brighton Park for a waterside feast featuring casseroles, brownies and the usual liquid refreshments. Many thanks, hares!

Walkers' turnaround, with some innovative markings:

New shoes?

Yes - new shoes!

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the world, Le W*nk and Hardcore met up for a date at the St. Lucia Twilight Run:

And, further up the coast, another group of hashers enjoyed the twilight in less strenuous way:

Hope they weren't planning to live off their catch:

Steamy!

This last Sunday will be remembered as the day a Scottish marathon runner collapsed while leading the field at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. (And as he had foolishly neglected to wear a green and gold shirt, the medicos just ignored him.) When we met at 4pm it still felt pretty darn hot and humid - and that's the runners' excuse for walking up many of the hills. We didn't want to risk it, as we weren't wearing green and gold either.

Hills? Surprisingly enough for an Ironbark Gully excursion, there were one or two. But it was generally a brilliant afternoon for a trot through the woods along a clear trail marked by plenty of flour. It's a good thing that skin contact with gluten doesn't seem to affect our hare Cadbury.

A tasty and gluten-free meal followed, accompanied by some of Shockjock's latest brilliant brews. Many thanks, hares!

It was a bit sad to bid farewell to Malpractice and B Flat - but we look forward to catching up with them again in October.

An enthusiastic Satchmo was so excited to see Eweshggr that he drew blood as he greeted him. Perhaps the young fellow needs his nails clipped (Satchmo, I mean):

Meanwhile, in Otago, Le W*nk was freezing at the rugby stadium. The crowd showed its usual Kiwi enthusiasm, and would have been even more enthusiastic if the teams had remembered to turn up to play:

Green, green valley

April showers finally held off on Sunday, but previous weeks of rain had turned the Dayboro valley even more beautifully green than usual. What a lovely afternoon for a jog and stroll along a well-marked trail around the neighbourhood!

We retired afterwards to the hares' hilltop retreat to gorge on some immensely tasty fish pie, cottage pie, peas, cake and custard...wow! Many thanks, hares. And wasn't it a good thing that a number of our members were down the Gold Coast for the Games, or away cruising, or in New Zealand? It left all the more for us!

The traditional Dayboro sunset shot:

And some of the hungry hordes:

Easter Feast

Potluck once again did us incredibly proud, putting on a huge Easter feast...so there were not that many takers for the Easter eggs that made up part of the dessert offerings!

Prior to this M. Promptu had taken the runners up the hill above BP Park (where our indulgence in Easter lunch took its toll) and the walkers around the Samford circuit. We all know that "it's not a race"...but it should be recorded that someone not previously known as a FRB came in first among the walkers and celebrated the occasion with a down, down!

Easter was traditionally known as a time for baptisms, so it was entirely appropriate that a young couple who have been joining us for a while now received their new monikers on Sunday. Welcome, Tatty and Squelch! Our Hash jeweler had been at work, so we were able to award them their name laces as part of the traditional ceremony.

It was good to see the sun for the first time in a while...and also good that Payback and Cash Converta had brought along the Hash lanterns. MBRC has still not been able to get the lights in the John Scott picnic shelter to work. How hard can it be?

Finally...please remember that we move to a 4 pm start time from next Sunday, the 8th April!
