Summit solstice sunset

The word is that not all the walkers made it to the summit to see the solstice (OK, solstice plus one) sunset. Here are a couple who did:

And for those who did not, here's the view you missed:

The runners circled the headwaters of East Ithaca Creek, gaining a good practical understanding of the geography of the area....

Back at Slaughter Falls and in the dark, we really lived up to our name as a family hash - with the crowd ranging in age from a couple of three year olds up to...well, heaven knows what. It was good to see everyone! Many thanks to our hares, Superhacker and Hopalong, for a great excursion and meal!

And commiserations to those who hurried home to catch the State of Origin.

When: Sunday 30th June, 4 pm

Wild hogs and wild weather

Who came up with the name "Wild Hogs' Tour" for our weekend bike trip? Dunno - but someone had warned the landlord at the historic Grand Hotel in Esk and we found tables reserved for dinner in that name. Perhaps they'd even put on extra staff in the expectation we'd live up to it?

Anyway, the 15 hashers and hangers-on who spent a leisurely 2 days riding the rail trail between Fernvale and Esk behaved as well as their bikes did. The weather was beaut and most of us had prepared our saddles well enough for 90 km of bottom-bruising bumps. And there was plenty of time for the odd noggin along the way....(Photo credits: Floater and Miss Demeanour)

Many thanks to Shockjock for his excellent organisation of the excursion...and thanks to all for being such excellent company.

Back in Samford, only 3 or 4 trail-riders joined the stayathomes for our regular Sunday meet (I heard that one or two others went straight to bed when they got back??) The heavens had opened, which meant a few folk were reluctant to leave the shelter and head off into the downpour and the Royal Estates. But Potluck as usual provided a right-royal feast. Thanks to all for their contributions!

Posts, gates, bars

There didn't seem to be many there at Shockjock's chalk talk, but numbers swelled as time went on. Is it possible that some people only turned up to join the throng at the bar?

And is it possible - as rumour had it - that there were a number of SCBs on the walk? It seemed hardly likely on such a typically flat Bunya route. But we were relieved to see a couple (who had done the whole walk) turning up as darkness fell. They'd come across a locked gate in the gathering gloom, which disconcerted them. To their joy they found they were only 50 metres or so from home!

Arrrgh! Poison!

Young ones enjoyed their meal in the calm and sophisticated surroundings of the formal dining room:

Leave Pass was welcomed back from the Old Country, and newly-named Idle Vice and Upstanding received their name laces from the Hash jeweller.

Many thanks to our hares for a scenic excursion and a gourmet feast!

Next weekend a number of us are riding the Fernvale to Esk section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Culture and Cash Converta are acting as support crew, joining us at Esk with our jumpers, PJs and teddy bears.

And mention of jumpers reminds me - has anyone seen Le W*nk's running jumper? Off or on another runner? He left it on a post for half an hour this last week in the salubrious area of Collins Road...nuff said. We did find a slightly soiled substitute on the run and left it on a gate for him. Seems he didn't fancy it.

When: Sunday 16th June, 4 pm
Where: John Scott Park, Samford Village
Hares: M. Promptu will set the run; Potluck will cater (please bring something share)

Garden of Eden

The group this Sunday was amazed by Boxer and Saucy's back garden, and especially by their impressively large and productive orchard.

This was a real Garden of Eden, full of good things to eat. A number of members were reluctant to tear themselves away - and Haughty had to take on the role of the angel with a flaming sword to drive them out of the garden and onto the trail. Like Milton's Adam and Eve...

They, hand in hand, with wandering steps and slow,
Through Eden took their solitary way.

Actually it wasn't all that solitary - close to 30 people gathered back in the garden for some seriously tasty Malaysian food followed by some seriously tasty home-grown fruit. Among them we welcomed back from OS Charcoal, Strine and Banger (Make an Offer was still suffering some effects from the journey home.) It was good to see them again.

A couple who have been coming along for the last several weeks received their Hash monikers. One was a retired Instrument Fitter (which sounds like a pretty good Hash name in itself) as well as a paddle-boarder. However after due deliberation and consultation we resolved to call them Upstanding and Idle Vice, and commemorated the occasion with the usual quaint ceremony (no-one caught this on film, so we might have to re-stage it....)

Some returnees:

Nice pomelos!

A fruitarian:

Many, many thanks to Boxer and Saucy, and congratulations on hosting their first Samford Hash run!
