The horror! The horror! 2018

Once again, our annual Halloween event allowed members of Samford Hash to cast off their disguises, leave off their makeup, and appear as their horrible true selves. How terrified the good citizens of Dayboro must have been! It was lucky that the Dayboro Police's elite squad of exorcists, ghostbusters and zombie slayers was busy elsewhere.

That bloody Le W*nk:

Keeping it in the family - Lax and Co.:

Payback and Cash Converta:

Haughty and Culture:

Miss Demeanour and Shockjock (Grrr):

A Black Sabbath tribute band?

Hellhound Heimi:

And most frightening of all - some people who really did dress up:

Back at the hares' haunted hilltop mansion, the meal began with a couple of bowls of blood:

A feeding frenzy followed, accompanied by sounds of rending flesh, cracking bones, shrieks, growls and howls (and that was just Le W*nk's contribution to the soundscape.)

Many, many thanks to our thoroughly scary hares, Banger and Make an Offer!

And congratulations to all for remembering the change of start time....

Calm after the storm

24 hours after the storms raced through this last Sunday there were still drifts of hail on the ground in some parts of Samford. The torrential rain that accompanied it also slowed our journeys across town to the Rocks Riverside Park, and it was after 4:15 that we set out. But Samford Hash runs and walks, come rain, hail or shine!

The trail, of course, had been completely obliterated, so we followed some verbal directions and did a bit of exploring upstream along the river bank. The clouds moved on, some late sunbeams broke through, and the storm was succeeded by a calm and peaceful twilight. Aaaaah....

We welcomed B Flat and Malpractice, who had joined with Superhacker and Hopalong to host the run. It was good to see them again and to enjoy one of Malpractice's recitations. Thanks, hares!

We were also joined by a couple of visitors from Tokyo - World Wide Whore and Tunnel of Love. They took part in a traditional welcoming ceremony, and will bear our greetings back to Where's the Beef? and In Your Dreams.

Next week's run will celebrate Halloween. You'll find reminders of some previous occasions on which we've left off our makeup and appeared as our genuine selves here, and here, and here....

It's also time for us to move to a 5 pm start time for summer. Remember this if you arrive at next week's meeting place and find you're the only one there!

Aquarius drizzles?

Who or what is the "It" we refer to when we say "It's raining" or "It's drizzling"? Is it a long-forgotten weather-producing sky-god - Aquarius, say? Or is "It" just a syntactical pacifier stuck in the clamouring mouth of a verb demanding a subject? Whoever or whatever "It" is, we were grateful to It for not tipping Its watering can over us this Sunday at the end of a seriously wet week. Thanks, Aquarius!

We were also grateful to our hares for accommodating us in a warm and dry place when It did start to rain again. A generous serving of - Chicken Marengo, was it? - was followed by some rhubarb crumble that rivaled Le W*nk's last week. Many thanks, hares!

Payback couldn't keep his hands off Shaggy's organ:

He reminded me of the old story which I'm sure must appear in many self-help books. Paddy is asked if he can play the piano. He replies, "I don't know - I never tried." You could apply this to anything, couldn't you? "Can you run a marathon?" "I don't know - I never tried." "Can you paint a masterpiece?" "I don't know - I never tried." I suppose it's good that we have so many trying people in Samford Hash....

Upcoming events include:

  • Shockjock's birthday pub crawl on 10th November
  • The Red Dress Run on 26th November
  • Le W*nk having a shower at some stage (really looking forward to this one)

Homeboy run

Le W*nk's building site - known colloquially as his home - was the setting for this week's run. Hashers were majorly impressed by the transformation that is going on in this not-so-humble abode. Also really impressive were the two curries (genuinely homemade, from scratch) plus the rhubarb and apple crumble that he and Lax laid on - very tasty indeed! And what can you say of a half-completed kitchen equipped with no less than 3 slow cookers? Well done, and thanks, hares!

I'm sure the trail markings would have been really impressive too if we'd been able to find any. As it was, George served as a live hare for the runners, and Lax as a live hare for the walkers, and the rain stayed away during a very enjoyable tour of the Mitchelton - Arana area.

Life on site (we probably should have been wearing hard hats):

We'll be moving to our summer start time of 5 pm from the date of our Halloween Run (28th October.)

"Position, position, position!"

...as the actress said to the bishop (and real estate agents have been known to quote her as well.) Our hares Urass and Bigtop treated us to a tour of one of Brisbane's classiest corners. (It was obviously even classier back when Urass resided there and attended Ascot State School.) There were plenty of fine residences to gawp at along Windermere Road and the surrounding streets. The runners nevertheless decided that the marked trail was insufficient and somehow ended up on Kingsford Smith Drive! Why?

Congratulations to our hares on marking the trail during the short gaps between showers, and on the filling and nutritious meal they rushed to the scene. Thanks, guys!

A classy Ascot crew:

Mamma Bigtop dishes up:

Friday evening saw a bunch of dancing queens coming together (and let's steer clear of that particular joke, thanks) at Miss Demeanour's screening of Mamma Mia. The word is that Le W*nk kept absolutely silent throughout the movie....

Here we go again:
