Off- and on-shore

11 of us were off-shore in Fiji this last Sunday at the end of an intense 4 days of Interhashing, while 9 others met on-shore in Samford at the end of an intense week of doing other (and probably more worthy) things.

Some Fiji highlights follow....

Fresh and clean at the airport:

The Red Dress Run at Lautoka - which raised some $40 000 for the Nadi Hospital. And we had a police escort all the way!

At the end of a hot Hamersley run:

Start of the Ball Breaker run..."We're going up where?"

The Ball Breaker run: 20.5 kilometres (according to Le W*nk's Garmin) of steamy cane fields, creek crossings, waterfalls, and a bit of hill-climbing....

The Momi gun site run...rainy and surprisingly cold on Sunday. You can see part of the curvature of the earth from here too, if you check the horizon.

Somewhere in Fiji:

Evenings were spent at Prince Charles Park, the main venue. The Samford purple was pretty noticeable...when we were not sporting ethnic costume. And we were able to meet up with a number of people we hadn't seen for a little while, including Heavy Metal (who visited us earlier in the year) and the irrepressible Tinkerbell.

And here are those who kept the home fires burning in Samford:

Since a number of members are still away enjoying resort life, we're having another M. Promptu and Potluck affair this coming Sunday. You're asked to bring some firewood, so we really can keep the home fires burning...Shaggy has volunteered to act as our arsonist for the evening.

Next run details
When: Sunday 3rd June, 4 pm
Where: Ironbark Gully picnic area. A map!
Hares: M. Promptu will set the run. Potluck will cater (please bring something to share). Please also bring some firewood - and a chair if you wish to sit around the fire.

Bon voyage

This last Sunday we bade a sad and traditional farewell to Squelch, who is heading off to defend us in Iraq for the next 6 months. Le W*nk tried to turn the occasion into a touching ceremony, but was told by Tatty to keep his hands to himself. We pledged ourselves to keep the home fires burning bright.

And we urged Squelch to watch out for people wearing hats like this:

The hares took us on a scenic route through the bush and up and down a few hills. The rays of the setting sun slanted prettily through the undergrowth until it set - when the walkers still on trail had to resort to their torches to follow the flour. I think we had about 30 runners and walkers when we set out, and almost that many at the end.

A number of us head off on Wednesday for Interhash in Fiji, so heaven knows where we'll be running on Sunday. Those keeping the home fires burning in Samford will meet for a potluck run at our home base in John Scott Park (and a fireplace there to keep a literal fire burning would be very nice.)

Finally, here are some of Eweshggr's shots from the 2018 Hash Girraween trip:

Next run details
When: Sunday 27th May, 4 pm
Where: For those taking part in off-shore activities - who knows? For the stayathomes - John Scott Park, Samford Village
Hares: For the stayathomes - M. Promptu or Toss O'Coin will set the run; Potluck will cater (please bring something to share.)

RIP Darcy

To start on a sad note, this week saw the passing of Darcy, who for much of his life was a keen Samford hasher. He was always eager to get going, yelping "Come on, what are we waiting for? On, on! On, on, guys!" He was always keen on tucking into any Hash nosh that was going. And he also saw Hash meets as an opportunity to do some exploring on his own - most notably on a memorable occasion in 2010. Miss Demeanour, Shockjock and Co. have lost a much-loved member of their family, and we will miss him from the Hash family too. RIP, Darcy.

We had a surprisingly large crowd for a Mothers' Day run this week. M. Promptu took us a short distance up Cedar Creek to Bellbird Grove and around a very pretty circuit which included a few creek crossings. And Potluck as usual produced a varied and substantial feast.

This year's Mother Superior Award went to someone who has been a hasher for a very long time - since the days when her own mother and father lived in Samford and used to hash with us. As Culture said, she displays notable mothering behaviour within her own family, and no doubt with her students. Scratchit testified that she's a "Mother Hen" - his words, not mine! And she showed off the formidable foundation-wear that make up the award with flair and aplomb! Congratulations, Floater.
