Bushed in the burbs

Our hares set our heads spinning this last Sunday, with a bewildering, twisting, turning, check-filled excursion through Stafford, Kedron and even (I think) bits of Chermside. We would occasionally catch glimpses of a landmark we recognised, but would be seeing it from a completely unfamiliar direction. Occasionally someone would exclaim "Oh, I know where we are!" before we plunged back into a wilderness of unfamiliar streets, parks and laneways.

Many thanks to the hares for a thoroughly enjoyable magical mystery tour - even those who had done the Bridge to Brisbane in the morning found it a relaxing tour of the territory.

Hardcore's hound Kumo (Japanese for "cloud" - and also for "spider") seemed to have grown a lot in a week. He reminded me of the following little story:

Two blonde housemates decide to get a puppy, and go off together to choose one. However when they see the litter the little dogs are all so cute they find it very hard to agree on one. They decide to get one each.

On the way home they discuss the question of how they will tell the two little dogs apart.

"I know," says one. "We'll tie a red ribbon around my puppy's neck and a blue one around yours."

They do this - but next day when they get home from work the puppies have been playing and have torn their ribbons off.

"We'll get them some collars," says the second blonde. "My puppy's one can be blue and yours can be red."

They do this - but the next day when they get home from work the puppies have been playing even more vigorously and have pulled one another's collars off.

"Oh, how are we going to tell them apart?" wails one of the blondes.

And then the other blonde suddenly has a brilliant idea: "I know!" she says. "I'll have the black puppy and you can have the white one!"

It's Fathers' Day next Sunday, which means it's once again time for the annual presentation of the Tight Jocks Award! Our hare is the current holder of the trophy. He promises that the Tight Jocks have never seen the inside of a washing machine from the day he first donned them! Who'll receive the honour this year? Come along and find out....

Man (sorry, person) vs. wild

Shockjock is a keen fan of the non-PC TV program and it showed this Sunday. He provided us with an extreme off-track adventure up and across some precipitous slopes - in an area that had recently been burned. The girls of both sexes made use of the gloves he'd provided.

Most of us just ended up with charcoal-black hands and black faces, but an emergency rescue team had to set out from home base with wine and bandages to comfort one member who'd done her knee. Lucky the satellite phone was working.

And then...just when we thought we were miles from home (and would soon have to start drinking our own urine) we found ourselves back there and drinking Shockjock's excellent home brew.

A great run and some wonderful nosh - and a good Irish joke from Chinwag too. Thanks to Miss Demeanour for rising from her sickbed to cater for us all.

Hardcore brought along the latest Hash hound - Kumo:

Shockjock also presented a couple of trophies from the airport trinket box:

Hot-to-trot's award referenced her role as the female Bruce Springsteen, while Haughty's referenced his role in an upcoming theatre production:

Next Sunday sees a return to a more sedate suburban venue. It will suit those of us who'll be running the Bridge to Brisbane in the morning.

Next run details
When: Sunday 29th August, 4 pm

More cakes and ale

August was obviously a popular month for weddings back in the Dark Ages...we celebrated another wedding anniversary this week. Strine and Charcoal have now shared the wedded state for 43 years - congratulations to them!

Our hares had struggled to find a few hills in the Clear Mountain area, but they managed it. We had a very pleasant run/walk in the crisp winter air, and then admired Payback's new paved area before covering it with splatters of grease from the BBQ.

I can't resist posting just a few more Borneo shots - this time from Bako National Park. Here are some Samford Hash members arriving at park headquarters, having traveled by sampan across the South China Sea (doesn't that sound romantic?)

At the end of a very hot walk we came to this beach (and found we could have traveled here by boat as well)

But then we'd have missed chatting with this fellow, who was hanging out coyly in the mangroves:

Next week Shockjock, Miss Demeanour and Co. (including Darcy) are doing the honours....

Next run details
When: Sunday 22nd August, 4 pm
Where: The run starts from Darcy's Kennel. If you need directions, please email us....

Tour de Samford

Toss O'Coin set the course for the runners this last Sunday, while his brother Flip did the same for the walkers. The former completed some tight little loops through the village before heading out on the Mt Glorious road, while the latter climbed the hills behind Baden Powell Park.

Pot Luck once again proved to be an excellent provider of quality nosh. We celebrated a 35th Wedding Anniversary - and to prove it here's a rare shot from the archives...a picture taken in 1974. Note the shawl, the Afro and the stylish hat:

The pictures from Borneo keep flooding in. There are so many excellent ones it's impossible to post them all here - they'll have to go into a web album, and they will when this old blogger gets some time.

Samford had a notable presence at the Interhash venue in Kuching:

This was a good place for meeting and making friends:

Payback made friends with the Malaysian Police (but they wouldn't let him ride the motorbike):

Formal dining at the Rajah Brookes cafe:

Bedding down at the Culture Inn (it's good that no-one snores):

Culture at the Culture Show:

The Mulu canopy walk:

Some Samford members at the Red Dress run:

We were very tame compared to some other Red Dress runners:

Next run details
When: Sunday 15th August, 4 pm
Where: Cash Converta and Payback's Cashmere cashbox
Hares: Payback and Cash Converta

If you need directions to this run please email us...visitors and new members welcome....

A pinch and a punch run

Our last run - on the first of the month - was also the final one from the old homestead. The hares, having bought elsewhere, are reluctantly offering this desirable riverside residence for sale. Ideal for kids and other small animals - charmingly situated and appointed - a wonderful venue for hosting Hash on, ons and other events. Inspection is bound to delight....

On our run from the village this coming Sunday we'll take a look at their new place.

It was great to welcome Superhacker and Hopalong back from their sabbatical in the UK! It was also great to welcome another 6 or so newcomers to the run. The hares were universally congratulated on setting a run which was hilly but not as horribly steep as our previous one - and on providing a terrific meal for the crowd....

A few more shots now from Borneo - and from pre and post Interhash events.

A pre-Kuching walk through Brunei (no funny comments, please. The sultan doesn't like it):

An evening stroll in Kuching:

Sunset on the Kuching waterfront:

Dining at the Rajah Brookes cafe:

Post Interhash at Mulu - the entry to Deer Cave on a rather rainy day:

Post Interhash at Mulu - the canopy walk:

Post Interhash in KL - Batu Cave

Some significant signage/labeling in Kuching:
