Shimmering sunset

Floater's skills as a photographer captured the beauty of the scene as the sun sank over Lake Kurwongbah, and people recounted their aquatic adventures on that stretch of water. Upstanding, for example, caught his one and only bass there - from his paddleboard - and almost got run over by eight rowers in a racing shell as he tried to catch another.

For our hares, the most horrific thing about this Halloween run was the overgrowth and closed-off access to the lake shores, which made setting a trail very difficult. It was a nice spot for sundowners and chili, though. Thanks, hares!

Some mothers and daughters: it's really scary to think how much these young ladies have grown up since their first run with Samford Hash a decade or so ago...good grief! They're both driving!

We celebrated the fact that Squelch has reached retirement age, despite his youthful appearance. That is, he's spent 10 years in the Army, which means he can now leave at any time without being dishonourably discharged.

Shaggy provided a celebratory cake decorated with cannonballs, bullets and ambiguous-looking body parts. There's not much left to see in this shot, but you might be able to make out some of the ambiguity:

There's another big milestone coming up next weekend, as Floater celebrates her half century - something that's again hard to believe. Her big bash is on Saturday evening in Arana Hills - and all Samford Hash regulars should have received an invite....

Congratulations to Shockjock on winning a First for his Brown Ale in the National Homebrew Competition! The rumour is that one day he might allow some of us to taste it!

Finally, as we hurtle towards the end of the year and your calendar fills up, make sure that you've reserved Friday December 13th for Hash Christmas in Dayboro....More details to come as we get closer to the date.

Next run details
When: Sunday 3rd November, 5 pm
Where: Hardcore's Moreton Bay Mansion (I think) in Brighton

"What do you think, Beaufort? 6 or 7?"

There was at least a stiff breeze blowing at Shorncliffe this last Sunday. Indeed, by applying the criterion "inconvenience felt when walking against the wind" we might come to the conclusion that it was actually a "Near Gale" (Wind Force 7) on the Beaufort Scale. What do you think?

Both runners and walkers completed pleasant circuits that took them inland between the heritage homes of the area and away from the whitecaps. And we then adjourned to a more sheltered spot to replenish our precious bodily fluids and stuff our faces. Many thanks to our hares Miss Behavin' and Budgie!

Eight of our regulars were away fossicking in the gemfields, so it was good to see a pretty substantial turn-up of both humans and canines.

Now for a moment of deja vu. Here's a shot of Shockjock in 2016, in a picnic shelter overlooking Moreton Bay, with the world's biggest burger:

Jamesbondage, the Hash Jeweler, had been busy, and recently-named Underpass received her highly valuable Hash necklace. Wonder if his future efforts will be decorated with the sapphires he's currently collecting in Rubyvale?

And it appears that there are things to do in Rubyvale apart from searching for sapphires:

This coming Sunday we'll be celebrating our 2019 Halloween Run, so please throw off your normal disguises and come as the Real You. You'll find reminders of some previous events here, here and here. And DON"T FORGET: from this Sunday we move to our summer start time of 5 pm!

Courts and balls

It seems only yesterday...but it was actually five years ago that we celebrated Superhacker's birthday at UQ with a wander under the jacarandas, a traditional circuit of the Great Court, and a gathering between the tennis courts. You'll find some happy reminders of that occasion here - and I urge you to have a look at them. None of us looks a day older...honestly!

When this old blogger was an undergraduate, the appearance of the first jacaranda blooms was the signal that it was time to start studying seriously for end-of-year exams. Presumably this still holds, which is why there were so many students playing tennis and basketball and jogging and snogging and otherwise avoiding study. It was not easy finding a car park and some people probably completed a 5 km walk or jog just getting to the start....

Anyway, Superhacker and Hopalong treated us to a very pleasant tour of the sandstone campus on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We once again raced around the Great Court and we once again took over centre court for curry and cake. Many thanks, hares - and happy birthday, Superhacker!

We were joined by Plod for the first time, and hope to see him again:

Mile High and Hugandkiss have sent us a pictorial puzzle from Iceland: do you recognise any Samford hashers among these mythic and epic figures?

And don't forget that we move to a 5 pm start from our Halloween Run on 27th October.

Many happy returns, Ma'am(s)!

Did it ever strike you as odd that it's the roughest, toughest, butchiest sorts of blokes who identify themselves most aggressively with the Land of Queens? ("Queenslander!!!") Anyway, queens of the desert, the burbs, and the city heart - all the queens of Queensland - celebrated the monarch's birthday this last weekend. Republicans don't stand a chance while she provides an annual public holiday.

A combination of the long weekend and footy finals meant that we counted only 20 of us at Fizza's virgin run, but those who came were rewarded with an excursion up and down and around a section of Kedron Brook that we haven't visited for quite a while. For the runners at least it brought back memories of the time that Le W*nk set a run up the stinking and polluted centre of the creek bed....

We welcomed Caboose, on a flying visit from the UK ("flying" only figuratively - he's traveling the globe over its surface, mostly by train.) His original home hash is the Jacaranda Hash in Pretoria; we assured him that Brisbane jacarandas usually put on a much better show than the one they're managing at the moment.

Caboose (visitor) and Fizza (virgin hare) shared a down, down:

Elsewhere in the world, Mile High and Hugandkiss have been exploring the capital of Iceland (which we won't try to spell.) A sail among the icebergs, anyone?

And - here's some prior warning - we will move to a 5 pm start time from our Halloween Run on 27th October. Wonder who will turn up at 4 on that day?
