"As uncertain as a child's bottom"

This classy quote from James Joyce's Ulysses summed up the weather this last Sunday. But the skies had cleared by 4 pm and there was even the occasional glim of sunshine. All trail markings had however been washed away, and at Dayboro our live hare set off on a bike armed with chalk and flour. The trail he set included a checkback that had some of the walkers grinding their teeth and a loop that had the unfit runners begging for mercy:

A couple of runners contemplate the route:

Back in the heart of the Dayboro CBD, in full view of the security cameras (it's true: Dayboro bristles with them!)

Meanwhile the other half of Samford Hash enjoyed a good walk/run around the Alderley bike paths, and huddled together afterwards (but not too close!) at Grinstead Park:

We have just one more week of hashing in twenties! (...provided we keep those infectious Victorians south of the border...)

The shortest day

The winter solstice began for Mile High and Hugandkiss with a pre-dawn walk along the beach at Kingscliff:

Others of us gathered at the early end of the afternoon at St Lucia and at Bunya.

Before the darkness came crashing down again, the walkers at St Lucia explored the riverbank and campus - some of them apparently finding themselves in unexpected places as they made their way to and from the Great Court. The runners added a chilly and mirky circuit through the Dutton Park cemetery: a highly appropriate route for the shortest day of the year. Back at Guyatt Park most of the group of twenty scrambled into jackets and tracky dacks before enjoying a midwinter feast beside the river. Shaggy apparently doesn't feel the cold!

Meanwhile in Tokyo, Where's the Beef? and In Your Dreams sported some stylish masks as they traveled to their midsummer Hash meet on public transport. They write: "In honor of the hydrangeas in bloom we took out the appropriate Samford hash shirts."

Those at the midweek run last Wednesday celebrated Eweshggr's birthday with an Indian Pepper curry:

We're counting down: we have two more weeks of hashing in twenties - and then (woo-hoo!) we'll gather as a whole group for a Christmas in July run on July 12th. Mark your diaries - and remember that this event starts at 3 pm to allow plenty of time for games and feasting!

Next run details

Rain and shine

It was wet; it was freezing cold; the wind whipped raindrops into our faces...at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon. By 4 o'clock however, it was calm; the dark clouds had cleared; and those hashers who had not decided to stay home by the fire enjoyed some lovely warm late afternoon sunshine and an equally lovely sunset. As the old slogan had it: "Beautiful one day, perfect the next." Here are some photos to show the wimps what they missed....

A shining puddle at Ironbark Gully was the only indication of what conditions had been like a couple of hours before:

Ducks, native hens, pelicans and lots of the human and doggy locals were out enjoying the sunset at Warner Lakes:

And a couple of international supermodels showed up to show off our new shirts:

Next week marks the winter solstice, though this year we'll celebrate the saturnalia when our whole group can get together on the 12th of July.

Next run details
When: Sunday 21st June at 4 pm
Where: Your choice of two venues (maximum of 20 at each). Please sign up online or email us with your preference.

Cleft in twain but still holding together

Despite the fact that we are cleft in twain (to be poetical), we're still having great turnouts. Once again there were more than 30 hashers this last Sunday over our two venues. And we're counting down towards being able to meet as a full group in a month's time....

In West Chermside, Le W*nk and Lax led runners and walkers along some unfamiliar walkways and into Raven St Reserve, where we haven't been for quite a while. There were rumours that some of the walkers took a shortcut,  but I'm not sure if we should believe them. Surely it's untrue?

Jamesbondage, the Hash jeweller, had been hard at work, and hare Le W*nk presented Hot Stuff with his name necklace!

Meanwhile in the Samford Valley, walkers and runners took on the railway line route to the old Yugar rail tunnel. Previously we have been able to duck in and disturb its batty inhabitants, but they are now protected by a much more substantial structure.

The walkers took care to obey the speed limit as well as social distancing requirements:

Don't forget our Christmas in July run on July 12th (more details to follow). And there's a proposal that the Hash bikers take on another section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail - to continue what we began in October 2017 (was it really that long ago?) and continued in June 2019. Non-biking support crews will of course also be welcome.

As those who receive Hash emails will know, there's been a bit of juggling going on around venues for next Sunday, but the sign-up sheet for what looks like being a wet occasion is now available.

Next run details
When: Sunday 14th June, 4 pm
Where: Your choice of two venues, each with a maximum number of 20 hashers - please sign up online or email us with your preference:
1. Ironbark Gully
2. Dragonfly Park, Warner
Trails will be set at both venues; however drinks and tucker are BYO.
Hares: Shaggy and Cadbury (Ironbark Gully); Payback and Haughty (Dragonfly Park)

You're advised to bring chairs to aid in social distancing....

In the bubble....

Within the Queensland bubble, Covid-19 restrictions are easing, and this last Sunday marked the end of hashing in tens. Travel throughout the state is now allowed, and there has been a suggestion that we start planning for a Hash weekend away this winter. From next Sunday we'll be hashing in groups of up to 20.

We were out and about at four venues again this weekend. One small group joined Charcoal to celebrate his birthday at Clear Mountain, where cake and gluhwein followed the walk and run. A "7" on the cake signified the relevant decade.

Other groups met at Teralba Park and John Scott Park. The ten hashers who turned up at Alfredson Park had a chance to try out (and model) our new 2020 shirts. Payback is following up on a problem with the boat-neck version, but the colours and design look great:

Elsewhere, Floater and Scratchit's garden continues to act as a cornucopia. She posted a picture of her first orange of the season, prompting this comment from Payback: "I love gazing at your navel." Let's leave it there.

Next run details
When: Sunday 7th June, 4 pm
Where: Two venues this week, with up to 20 people at each. You still need to sign up - please do so online, or email us with your preference. (1) Huxtable Park, West Chermside (2) Samford Soccer Grounds, Samford Parklands.
Hares: At Huxtable Park, Le W*nk, Lax and Co. will set a trail. At Samford Soccer Grounds, Haughty will set a trail. At both venues please BYO drinks and tucker.

And please remember to bring chairs if you want to sit down!
