Samford Downs and Samford Ups

This Sunday's Samford Downs run/walk saw us sauntering from the golf course to the Showgrounds along back routes and byways. These were paths that hadn't echoed to cries of "On, on!" for many years. According to legend a former hare once led the pack right through one of the houses we passed (it was open for inspection at the time.)

The runners' route then took them up a 45 degree slope and over the range into a peacock-infested region of the Cedar Creek valley. A white knight had to rescue some of them from these savage beasts, and to give them a lift back home before darkness fell....

We welcomed one visitor from Colombia, and another who is an ultra-marathoner (a bit daunting, that!)

Thanks, hares! A great run, and great nosh!

Here are some bits of the chilly circle:

Shockjock presented Upfront and Slammit with a stilt each - and once we'd learnt the Sesame Street lesson about having to share, everyone had to have a go (Jack wasn't much good):

The day before (Saturday) a few Hash members strolled up from Christmas Creek to the Stinson wreck on the Mcpherson Ranges. Here are a few shots.

The creek crossing (only two wet feet in all):

French dressing

Lots of red, blue and white among the group that took French leave and gathered at Newmarket this Sunday to celebrate the French national day. Some green too - to celebrate frogs?

But Eweshggr had to be the star for his extraordinarily authentic costume - striped jumper, beret and white flag. What could he be but French? And Redbreast donned an extremely skimpy French maid's outfit as well...wasn't she cold?

It was a revolutionary walk/run - in the sense that we did go round in a big circle. The route was over some new territory and the Banks St reserve was a bit of a surprise to some (you don't expect to find an area of bushland like this so close to the city centre.) Half way round we crossed paths with a Brisbane Hash run set for the next day - proof perhaps that this was Real Hashing country....

A French menu accompanied some authentic French cuisine at the on, on.

It's amazing, really...

After almost 21 years, some of our hares are still able to open our eyes and surprise us with new (unhashed) trails around the Samford area! That's what Jamesbondage and Redbreast did this last Sunday, opening up new country through Bunya/Cashmere and along the North Pine. A great run/walk (in freezing conditions!) - many thanks. Many thanks too for a superb 3 course meal at the on, on. Even Fleabite was heard to say "That was very nice...."

Other news is that for the next few months the regular midweek run will be moving to a Tuesday night rather than a Wednesday. This Tuesday saw 9 of us meeting at John Scott Park for half an hour of gentle exercise, followed by some temperance beverages, scuttlebut and badinage at the public bar. By now Darcy is probably feeling the effects of guzzling some of the spent cooking oil used for starting the woodfire in the bar...hope he made it home without incident....

And Payback scooped the homebrew awards at the Samford Show, picking up a first for one of his pale ales along with a couple of other prizes. To prove that the competition is not biased in favour of members of Samford Hash, Haughty came nowhere with his stout (word is that it was "watery, a typical kit beer...." Ouch!)

A Bastille Day run this coming Sunday. Take some French leave and come dressed as a French maid, or a French letter...and be prepared to run away.

A bit of an...

informal run/walk this Sunday. No hare, so the walkers set off in one direction to explore the mud puddles along the South Pine River, while the runners headed off in another and for a while didn't know where they were....They ended up crashing through the jungle in an attempt to find and follow the river home. It was a bit like Borneo - where we were this time last year....

There were a few reminiscences from Borneo at the on, on as well - memories of eating deep-fried prawn heads and fresh green fern fronds...and of course of the fittings and towel supplies at the Culture Inn. As usual with a pot luck affair, the nosh was ample and scrumptious.

We sang Happy Birthday to a visitor turning 21 - in half a year or so Samford Hash will be turning 21 as well!

A little story:

A bloke is sitting in the pub crying into his beer.

"What's up, mate?" asks his friend.

"My wife is cheating on me!"

"How do you know?"

"She didn't come home last night, and when she arrived this morning she said she'd spent the night with her sister."

"How do you know that wasn't true?"

"Because I spent last night with her sister!"
