Grand Designs in Upper Kedron

Leave Pass returned from his trip to Japan to find that new developments had sprouted all around his neighbourhood. This Sunday he gave us an opportunity to explore these, and to play Kevin McCloud as we examined the houses under construction. Gosh, it's easy to be critical! - far easier (probably) than it is to turn a quid in the building game these days....

Incidentally, where Leave Pass had been in Japan, a lot of houses were collapsing under the weight of a record amount of snow. Good for ski-ing, but not so good for the locals - except the builders.

Those who have lived in cold places will recall how hard it can be to drive when there is a lot of snow on the ground, and more falling. This is what happens to a young blonde from the US in the following story:

A blonde is trapped in a snow storm. Luckily she remembers what her dad once said: "If you're caught out in a snow storm, try to get in behind a snowplow [he was American, hence the spelling] and drive along behind it."

So that is what she does. She follows the snowplow for about an hour.

Then the driver stops, walks back to her, and asks what she's doing. She tells him, explaining that she is following her dad's advice.

"Well, that's OK," says the snowplow driver. "But I've finished the K Mart carpark now. Do you want to follow me over to Walmart?"

Miss Demeanour's First Time

Miss Demeanour not only cooked the meal, but set the walk all on her own - for the first time ever. And she did so very well, with a couple of really tricksy check-backs. (There were one or two hills as well.)

Shockjock added another 5 km for the runners, which took them over the hills and down to the Lomandra picnic area. Here Darcy indulged himself with a cool wallow in the creek. It would have been nice to have joined him.

It was high time for some namings, and we carried out the ceremony with the usual solemn ritual. Culture took some pointillist shots with her phone. As a camera, it makes a great phone.

So welcome to Banger and Make an Offer:

And another welcome (and farewell) to Malpractice and B Flat. They've been coming to our runs whilst visiting Oz over the last 3 years...and they came to this one on their way to the airport and the start of the long trip home. We look forward to seeing them next year again.

By the way, it seems that Hardcore is stuck in Hawaii following the collapse of the budget airline she and her new husband were flying with. The collapse was triggered by the fact that the company couldn't afford to buy fuel, so I guess it's lucky that the plane they were on didn't run out half-way across the Pacific....

Twenty one! Woo hoo!

Our 21st birthday run took on some of the features of a wet teeshirt contest as the skies opened and we were drenched. Fortunately, we had some celebratory dry shirts awaiting us at the on, on, as well as a huge and varied feast:

There were no founding members present, but we did have some very early members - people who have been hashing with Samford Hash since the early 90s of last century:

And we also had representatives of the up-and-coming generation - one of whom began hashing when he was still in nappies. (Some of us are about to start wearing them again....)

The "On, On" themed cake was flavoured with toe jam and tinea:

We invited a visitor from the UK - Diarrhoea - to cut it on our behalf:

And we hoped his Hash name wasn't catching. Incidentally, this was his 516th hash run (I think). Good on him for keeping count - most of the members of Samford Hash have difficulty remembering what day of the week it is....

Here are a few more shots from the occasion. Firstly, the group who made it to the on, on (and didn't let little matters like weddings, and picking up the children get in the way). Thanks to Topless for the photography.

A bunch of wets:

A clutch of Poms:

Some assorted old (OK, and young) f*rts:

On, on...to the next 21 years!

Uncouth mount Mount Coot-tha

From the hares' description at the start the route sounded a bit complicated, but it wasn't. In simple terms the run/walk could be divided into two parts:
Part A - Up
Part B - Down
Simple!

The runners' trail took them to the summit; the walkers' around a circuit on the lower slopes. We thought we'd lost a couple at the finish - so it was good to see them appearing through the woods. They hadn't been eaten by koala bears....

Once again Superhacker and her team produced a ribfilling and tasty feast. Thanks, hares!

Hardcore is becoming a mature married lady next weekend, and she anticipated this important event with a down, down at the on, on. We wish her many more.

The other big event this coming weekend is, of course, Samford Hash's 21st Birthday Run! Remember: our start time - for this week only - will be 4 pm, to give us a bit more time to party!

21st birthday run

Some of our members have been busy producing a Hash vintage from vineyards at Clear Mountain and Cedar Creek. What will the result be? Wine, or vinegar? Here are a few shots of the process....

The harvest:

Hand-sorting the grapes (not really commercial, but pretty social):

Trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored:

Highly scientific hydrometer reading:

Sampling the juice: Will it ever be drinkable again?

The winemakers:
