Ultra-marathon (well, almost!)

Lying shamelessly through his teeth, our hare Le W*nk announced a 7 km walk and a 9 km run.  Ha!  He was (perhaps) right on the walk, but his i-Phone GPS measured the run at a whopping 12.6 k along Kedron Brook and through the heart of Mitchelton.  Just what we needed to blow the cobwebs away - especially the sneaky loop on the far side of Samford Road....

We could obviously expect no truth from him about the meal either.  After promising a basic snag or two, he laid on a gourmet feast!  Thanks, old fella.

We bid farewell this week to Eweshggr, Charcoal and Strine - all heading off for 6 weeks in a generally south-westerly direction.  Do they think it'll be any warmer down that way?

Miss Demeanour and her assistants demonstrated their entrepreneurial skills by making megabucks at the St. Andrew's School Fair Lucky Dip stall - and still turned up for the run.

Finally, some Samford Hash members accompanied Payback on Saturday when he took his spanking new mountain bike for its first outing.  In an Excellent Boy's Own Adventure, they came across an abandoned little mine in the Camp Hill area.  No gold, though....We might take a torch and check it out again on a future run.

Campus capers

Winter seems to have set in early this year, but conditions were very pleasant at St Lucia this Sunday.  Remember the storm that sent us scurrying for shelter on our last visit to the campus?

The walkers toured both the sandstone heart of the university and the far-flung facilities beyond. Some of the younger ones finished off with a ferry ride back to base.  Meanwhile the runners headed off across the Eleanor Schonell Bridge for a scenic saunter through the back blocks of Hill End - and also took a ferry home.  Thanks to our Superhacking and Hopalonging hares!

Given the location, some conversations naturally turned to education, and - strange coincidence! - it turned out that In Your Dreams and Haughty were both alumni of the University of Notre Dame du Lac in South Bend, Indiana.  Moreover, they had both spent a year of high school as exchange students in small towns in Minnesota!  A challenge: can you pick out a beardless Haughty from the rest of his Minnesotan high school cross country team?

We have some Nationalistic runs coming up - a 4th of July one, and a Bastille Day one - plus a Christmas in July celebration!  Oh, and Le W*nk has promised that next week's run will not involve any paddling in the pristine waters of Kedron Brook.  It might be wise to bring some old shoes though - just in case....

Mother Superior 2013

We celebrated birth mothers, earth mothers and mothering in general this Sunday in our annual trip down Mammary Lane.  The Mother Superior Award was presented with all due ceremony to this year's worthy recipient, the drama queen Miss Demeanour.  The symbolic costume has to be worn on the outside - how else would we recognise her as a Superhero?

Heavy showers had pelted the area just before we set out for the run/walk, so we had to exercise our puny imaginations in trying to work out where Leave Pass might have intended to lead us.  The runners did find a couple of arrows that hadn't been washed out on their way home - and they were going in the right direction.  Purely by chance though....

An Italian-themed meal, prepared according to the old family recipe by Mama Aldi, awaited us at the on, on.  Thanks to Leave Pass and Heimi!  And thanks to all those who refrained from singing "Thanks for the mammaries" and "Mammary - all alone in the moonlight...."

Bring your GoCards to next week's run - unless you're sure you can walk on water!

Next run details
When: Sunday 19th May, 4 pm
Where: UQ CityCat ferry terminal, University of Queensland (Don't forget those GoCards!)

Enchanted forests

It's amazing how many green leafy spaces there are in the Ashgrove/Newmarket area!  These offer plenty of opportunities to get lost and confused, and our hares did their best to lose and confuse us - with some success.  It's a bit hard to remember exactly where the trail went, but I'm sure we toured the Banks St reserve.  And didn't we go some way along Enoggera Creek?  Were there perhaps some intricate windings along suburban streets?

We got back to find that Urass had been busy stirring his cauldron at the Enchanted Forest playground, brewing up a tasty witch's feast for the enchanted wanderers....

It was good to welcome Radar (complete with 2 new hips - the GT racing versions) and his mate Darcy.  He asked if we would like to make up a table at the Hash Ball in August.  Who said that hashers don't have balls?  Word is that he is already planning this year's Red Dress run, and that it will be bigger and better than ever!

Finally: young comedian Melinda Buttle is appearing on Tractor Monkeys this week (ABC TV1, Wed 8th May, 9 pm - catch up on ABC iView at http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/comedy if you miss it.)  Melinda has some strong Samford Hash connections, and we really enjoyed her show at the Powerhouse a year or so ago.  Wonder if she'll make any jokes about her Father???
