Anyone for Tennyson?

"Then to the shore of one of those long loops
Wherethro' the serpent river coil'd, they came.
Rough-thicketed were the banks, and steep...."

(from Tennyson Gareth and Lynette (1872) - one of the Idylls of the King)

It's hard to avoid quoting Alfred, Lord T. after running through a suburb named after him and along streets named in honour of the Idylls of the King. Though I don't recall King Arthur having a terrace at Camelot. A hall, yes; a round table; even a jousting ground...but a terrace?

Anyway, it was a very pleasant day for a knightly quest along the long loops of the serpent river. Thanks to Superhacker and Hoppy for introducing us to a spanking new venue! The old power station site looked very different from the way we remembered it. And Shockjock had fond memories of the riverside path he used to follow to and from college back in medieval times....

Here are a few pics of this Sunday's walkers and runners enjoying a classy picnic beside the rough-thicketed river banks:

And here's a shot of some of the Warrumbungle expeditioners. That's not a dog, is it?

There and back again

Remember the story of The Hobbit or There and Back Again? A bunch of odd folk set off through the wilds to a cave with some gold in it, and then head back home again. This week's run/walk was a bit like this, except that there was no dragon in the cave - and no gold either. Nor was the country all that wild. Come to think of it, it wasn't very similar to The Hobbit at all....

We did welcome back some real travelers from the wild this Sunday. The bulk of the Warrumbunglers returned and regaled us with tales of intense heat and smuggled pooches (ask them.) And this coming Sunday we'll be venturing with some trepidation into the Unknown - the wild tracts of land that stretch out south of the Brisbane River. Survivors who have returned from these regions bring back strange tales. Do you dare to join us?

A while back we featured a gallery of Hash injuries. There was a goodly collection of new ones to show off this week:

Finally, our 1200th run is coming up on the 20th April! This is a Big Event - like our 1000th run in 2010, and our 21st Birthday run in 2012.  Try to keep your diary clear....

When: Sunday 23rd February, 5 pm

City Lights Tour

The big news this week: Hardcore missed this Sunday's run because she was busy giving birth to Eloise Sophia. It's great to welcome a new member to the Samford (Family) Hash family! Congratulations to mum, dad and grandma Bigtop - and let's start kicking some Hash names around....

Another highflying Japanese visitor joined us this week on a run/walk that took us through the RBH complex, across the ICB, and past the RNA (as well as lots of other acronyms, I have no doubt.) The runners then went on a diverting diversion through FV and along the river as far as Newstead House. It was a very pleasant saunter through bits of the city we haven't visited for a while. Thanks, hares! (Great salad too, BTW.)

Now - were Culture and Nipliquor making a fashion statement when they turned up at Downey Park wearing slings? Nope - they'd both suffered sporting injuries, spreadeagling themselves on the bitumen as they sped along. Get well soon, guys.

We haven't heard much from the 8 Warrumbunglers so far, except that one of them distinguished herself by downing a whole bottle of Lambrusco one evening (no comment.) We look forward to some stunning pics when they get back. Here's a preview.

Finally - don't forget the mozzie repellent this coming Sunday - you know what Lomandra is like!

When: Sunday 16th February, 5 pm
Where: Lomandra picnic area, BFP. (A map!)

Horsing around

This last Sunday saw us celebrating the Year of the Wooden Horse by galloping around the northerly limits of our usual home range. It was a lovely day for an excursion through the  back blocks of Dayboro. Shame on those who took the final SCB option! And many thanks to our hares for a great run/walk and a great meal....

The crew enjoying Dayboro sundowndowners:

The Chinese astrologers don't have many cheerful predictions for the year ahead - earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, extreme temperatures, economic disasters and conflict are evidently all expected. Let's hope the 8 Samford hashers who set off on Monday to walk the Warrumbungles all make it back safely!

As promised, here are a few more shots from last weekend. Luckily the Year of the Wooden Horse had not yet started, or the sort of horseplay whose results you can see here could have ended rather badly....

Oz Day walkers:

Birthday boy:

Next week's run sees us heading back in towards the Bright Lights of the Big City. We'd better change our underwear in case we get knocked over crossing a busy road and are taken to hospital - remember what your mother said!

Next run details
When: Sunday 9th February, 5 pm
Where: Green Terrace play area, Downey Park, Windsor (near where the road bends towards Northey Street.) Clear as mud? Here's a map!
