One day of the year...

ANZAC Day is always pretty special, and this year the Shggrs made it even more so. For some Samford Hash members the day began up the mountain at the Jolly's Lookout dawn service:

We finished the day back up the mountain, re-enacting some of the great jungle campaigns - crossing the "River Kwai" and the "Sepic River", and struggling up the "Burma Road" and the "Kokoda Track".

Our hares laid on a great run for the Samford Hash Athletic Group and our visitors Radar and Mudballs. They followed it up with a wholly authentic meal of bully beef, spud, onion and carrot....

Who won the biggest leech competition? Nipper put in a good performance, though by the time this photo was taken his bite had been covered with a bandaid:

And Culture found a fair-sized leech when she got home and took her shoes off:

But no-one could seriously compete with Radar's scar. Was this really caused by a bloody big leech, or by a hip operation?

We celebrated Miss Demeanour's birthday in the usual style, though she'd have preferred a better quality wine for her down-down:

The cake:

And who could celebrate Anzac Say without a game of Two up?

Come in, spinner!

On another front, the Samford Hash Art Project is nearing completion. As a group portrait, it will be entered in the Archibald Prize next year! Here's the current state of the Senior canvas:

The grand old Duke of York...

provided the model for the Samford Hash hares this Sunday. They marched about 26 of us up to the top of the hill and they marched us down again. And when we were up we were up...(etc.)

It was a really enjoyable run/walk, with some triffic views over the city and over the Samford valley. This was followed by a magnificent meal featuring a choice of 2 tasty mains (most people had both)! Many thanks to Wizzbanger and Hot to Trot.

It was great to see Bendit running again, after her serious (and rather expensive) injury.

For those who'd like to relive the Stanthorpe weekend, you'll find a lot more photos here.

Granite and grog

While some of the younger members of Samford Hash were disporting themselves at the seaside, some of the more mature and sensible ones were enjoying the best of the Granite Belt. Here are a few commemorative shots from the weekend (there'll be more to follow)....

The cocktails on both Friday and Saturday nights had some unexpected effects. After a sip of a Randy Little Kiwi...

Payback turned into a pyjama-clad table dancer:

Was methylated spirits really the secret ingredient in Domestic Violets?

We fitted 16 around the farmhouse dining table (although some had to crawl under the table to get to their seats):

Saturday was a walking/running day. While some followed a trail along the creek, others set out for Mt Norman:

along a route that led up vast granite slabs to the summit

The secret to reaching the peak was to go all the way up the cleft (as the actress said to the bishop):

Summit shot:

Saturday night dinner at the local pub, where they had a unique system for mixing up meal orders:

James Farmhouse - a comfortable venue:

Wine-tasting. The winemaker: "What sort of group are you?" Urass: "We're the Samford Swinger's Club!"

Many, many thanks to Charcoal and Strine for doing such a great job of organising the accommodation and the catering!

Blind as bats!

Hardcore had brought along a brace of eggstremely eggcitable poodles to this year's Easter Egg run. But what the runners really needed for the eggscursion were some eggspertly-trained guide dogs. They missed the trail not once but twice - and on the second occasion egged one another on up and down some eggcessively steep hills and gullies...with no flour in sight. They eventually eggstricated themselves from the bush, completely eggless.

The walkers were assisted by the poodles and Jessie in sniffing out their full quota of chocolate.

An eggcellent Easter run as usual - thanks to our traditional bunnies, Charcoal and Strine.

The coming weekend sees the bulk of Samford Hash regulars up at Stanthorpe for some terrifying assaults on the peaks and some even more terrifying assaults on our livers. The program includes some winery visits on Friday; cocktail experiments on Friday night; climbs, walks and a run on Saturday; and more runs, walks and wineries on Sunday. Assuming we make it past the RBTs we'll be back Sunday night - and then we'll really need a holiday....
