Hash smash!

(Try saying that quickly!)

It's Father's Day this Sunday, and Shockjock, Miss Demeanour and Co. are inviting us to celebrate by smashing some balls - across a table.  Bring $5 for the hire of the table tennis facilities - we'll have an hour of smashing play after the run and before our normal Father's Day shindig.

A weekend of smashing Hash activities this last weekend kicked off when Haughty arrived home on Friday evening to find a surprise birthday party awaiting him.  He was genuinely gobsmacked... what a great night!  Thanks to all who contributed, and congratulations for keeping stumm!

This was followed up on Saturday when Shockjock led five members out onto the bush trails for our inaugural bike hash.  Some (like B & W) were experienced mountain bikers, others absolute novices (they were the ones with white faces and clenched teeth.)  We had one minor smash at the bottom of a steep hill, but fortunately no bones - or bikes - were broken.  It was good fun, and we'll do it again (note the leader in the yellow jersey.).

On Sunday Superhacker and Hopalong set a cunning run that took us across the water to lower the tone of the leafy and pricey residences that overlook the river at West End and Dutton Park.  A trot across the Green Bridge brought us back to UQ, where the runners toured the campus while the walkers caught another ferry home...thanks, hares!

Next run details
When: Sunday 2nd September, 4 pm
Where: Corner Hulcombe Road and Harold McDonald Place, Highvale
Hares: Shockjock, Miss Demeanour and Co.

Remember to bring $5 towards the hire of the place...and if you need directions to this run, please email us.

Pot luck a-plenty

Potluck as usual provided a preposterously prodigious proliferation of provender for the 30 hashers and guests who'd turned up for a M. Promptu wander through the woods last Sunday. Well done to all cooks!

It was good to welcome a couple of local guests as well as Moshi-Moshi, a visiting hasher from the land of the rising sun:

Snap! An amazing example of telepathy...these girls assured us that this twinning wasn't planned:

Greetings arrived this last week from Jamesbondage and Redbreast who were in Sarajevo at the time. This is the town that the local Tourist Board really managed to put on the map in 1914 by staging the event that started WW1. We might prepare some trivia questions to put to these travellers on their return. What were the names of Archduke Ferdinand's corgis? What colour was the Black Hand? We look forward to seeing their photos....

We also bade farewell this week to another couple of travellers: Charcoal and Strine are heading off for another venture into the Red Heart of the continent. We look forward to their photos too.

We'll be crossing the water ourselves this coming Sunday, so you'll need your Go-card. And don't be late! The word from our hares is as follows:
The plan is to catch a ferry at 4.08.
Latecomers, dogs and stragglers to follow blue arrows til you pick up the trail (and turn around when you meet the rest of the hashers)
Got it?

Next run details
When: Sunday 26th August, 4 pm
Where: Guyatt Park, 46 Hiron St, St Lucia QLD 4067, Australia
Hares: Superhacker and Hopalong

PS: Don't forget that Go-card for the ferry!

Ahhh! Dusk over Dayboro...

Once upon a time, on a beautiful winter afternoon in Dayboro, our hares took us on a fascinating tour of that bustling metropolis.  We passed the US Embassy, the South Pacific Museum of Antiquities, the International Headquarters of the IOC, the World Centre for Scientology Research...and some nice houses listed for sale by that prestigious firm, Fox and Co.  It was a very enjoyable flattish run, offering some great views over the valley in the late afternoon sunlight and featuring kilometre markings to cheer the weary....

Banger - true to his name - followed up the run with some special sausages from the famous Dayboro sausage specialist, while Make an Offer laid on lashings of salad.  Vast piles of food vanished down the gullets of the ravening hordes (actually, there were only a couple of dozen of us, so we must each have eaten a lot!)  Many thanks to our hares!

Here's a thought: 8 km in under an hour - the runners could have completed the London marathon course in, say, 5.25 hours.  That's only 3 and a bit hours behind the leaders...perhaps if we really started training we could make a show at Rio in 4 years time.  Wadya think?

Next run details
When: Sunday 19th August, 4 pm
Where: Ironbark Gully picnic area (it's ages since we ran/walked from there)
Hares: M. Promptu will set the run; catering by Potluck (please bring something to share).

"Cold, well-fed and smelling

of woodsmoke"...that's how someone described the members of Samford Hash at our latest winter weekend away.

Many thanks to all who put in such a mammoth effort to organise and feed us - Charcoal and Strine, Payback, Cash Converta and Le W*nk in particular.  Who'd have thought Le W*nk (the wood-whisperer) would have such skill in pizza production?  And Charcoal led a talented team of camp oven roast dinner makers.  Payback's wine tasting event once more plumbed the depths of our ignorance of wine styles and regions...but Eweshggr had brought along a jolly good drop.

The early morning runs were not as well supported as they might have been - had there not been so much frost around...perhaps....

Here are a few shots from the album:

Runners line up at 6:30 on Saturday morning

Now, on a completely different note: does anyone remember the Hash Mash - the brew produced earlier this year by some of our members?  One of the bottles was sampled by the Samford Show Brewing competition judges...and here are the results.  Not bad, huh?

Next run details
When: Sunday 12th August, 4 pm
Where: The dead centre of Dayboro - the Dayboro cemetery
Hares: Make an Offer and Banger
