Triumph and tragedy (and a very pleasant Dayboro jaunt)

We tend to avoid controversial subjects at Hash (really?), so no-one mentioned the first Ashes test ("just not cricket"). But who could avoid the topic of France's defeat of the Wallabies? Especially when it's so easy to make Budgie sulk?

Dayboro and the surrounding hills were once again very green and scenic this Sunday, an early morning storm having washed the air clean and clear. The walkers took on a circuit through the Showgrounds and beyond, while the runners enjoyed a new route Banger had found, short-cutting across a paddock en route for the hill country. We headed back to the hares' to feast on copious quantities of chili and cake. Many thanks to Banger and Make an Offer, our hospitable hares!

As usual at this time of year, there are a lot of Big Events coming up:

  • the Red Dress Run on December 1st; we're once again expecting a sizable Samford Hash contingent, most of whom will be catching the 5.02 train from Ferny Grove;
  • our Hash Christmas Party at Lax and Le W*nk's on the 6th; the theme is "Over the Top!"; and
  • (looking forward a bit) the Dayboro Beer Mile on Australia Day; it sounds as though B&W will be joining the usual runners for this occasion, and we'll all have to put in some beer-drinking practice before then....

When: Sunday 30th November, 5 pm.

Another OBE

We celebrated Strine's Big Birthday this week - with cake!

This year also marks Strine's 34th year of hashing with Samford Hash, so she is one of the very few who were around in 1991 and who are still around....And she doesn't look all that different from the way she did in this early pic:

It was good to revisit the Clear Mountain trails that we haven't been on for a while, and to find out that they are just as flat as they always were, which is not very. Everything was looking wonderfully green following recent rain, and there were plenty of puddles for the dogs to sport in. Any possible markings would have been washed out, so the walkers followed a map while B&W acted as a live hare for the runners. Here are some of Snappy's shots of the gathering crowd and of the walk:

Back home beside the lake we feasted on chicken, pork, salad - and cake. Many thanks to our birthday girl hare, along with her assistants B&W and Trudi Fruti! (pics courtesy Snappy, Make an Offer, Idle Vice, Lax)

Elsewhere in the world, Superhacker writes that all is well in the UK, with Malpractice recently "celebrating the big 'two fat ladies' (bingo ref)". Hopalong is working in a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities school in London, living in the posh Highgate area, walking across Highgate Wood to Muswell Hill...and meeting TV stars like Hugh Dennis on the way. Superhacker is keeping "unbelievably busy running to and fro between [BFlat and Malpractice's] house and my flat with Hopalong's dog Teddy", and has somehow become "onsite manager with the bins and garden and general hiring of maintenance men" for the building her flat is in, "a building that has been in Bflat's family since about 1948". She continues: "I'm still cycling a lot and got an electric bike for my 60th birthday. I'm still playing in a local orchestra, and doing various activities with the u3a including learning French and managing the AI interest group."

We may see Hopalong in the middle of next year, and with any luck, see Superhacker herself in October. We're looking forward to another of her famous jacaranda runs! And of course we wish her, BFlat, Malpractice and Hopalong all the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Remember the Red Dress Run on Dec 1st, and Hash Christmas on the 6th....

Eight Dog Night

Eight canines - this has to be something of a record! It was a bit of a struggle for some of the owners to keep them separate as we gathered for this Sunday's meet...because after all every dog has his or her pride and a need to sort out who's who in the hierarchy....

Rain had done its best to wash out the markings, but the blue arrows were still there for those with eyes to see. The trail took both runners and walkers past some of the extraordinary Grand Designs that have sprouted (and are sprouting) over the Wilston hill. What impressive homes they are! And if anyone is wondering why it's so hard to get a builder nowadays, it's because they are all working in this area.

Runners and walkers set off on the Grand Tour:

Runners added a loop around the Eildon Hill Reservoir:

Back home, we set up under cover in case the rain returned, and enjoyed a feast of curry and pasta and salad, followed by dessert! Many thanks to hares Upstanding and Idle Vice!

It was great to welcome back Shockjock and Miss Demeanour after the really difficult few months that they have been experiencing, and to celebrate his birthday:
